Xopher, Juli, and David my sympathies. You're in my thoughts.
BC (STM) 140 Now there's a movement I can get behind.
I make myself not think about historical accuracy and consistency in TV shows, or I get ranty and stabby about lousy research.
Serge, please pardon me while I rifle through my armory of black powder puns.
abi @36 I thought Jim was the patron saint of wool blankets. They have many uses, don't melt when exposed to heat, and are still insulative when wet.
Ginger @33 St. Michael Archangel is the patron saint of radiologists. Which isn't the same thing at all. Hmm...
The School of Mines and ROTC folks at the university I attended used to have an annual celebration of St. Barbara's day. Everyone was invited to enjoy a bonfire, have a potluck, drink beer, someone (usually faculty) would pontificate on St. Barbara and then they'd blow some shit up.
The observance off sometime in the early 90s. Apparently MODERN university administration types don't like mixing fire, booze, and explosives. What a bunch of wet blankets.
Serge 461 snort
And a pretty frisky 49 at that, eh?
Having been bumped a grade I was always younger than my classmates. When I turned 30 I proudly announced that I was now older than lots of people, and would no longer have to deal with being the youngest person in the room/office/group/etc. Getting older is better than the alternative option.
Serge @ 452 I was asked by someone known for her complete lack of social skills if I'd noticed I was slowing down since I'd hit 50.
I'm 36. I laughed. It was a consider the source moment.
I agreed to help out with my 20 year HS reunion for a school I only went to for 2 years, where I socialized with the drama and science geeks. But, they need the help and they asked, so I'm going to do it. I have no idea who most of my "classmates" are, but I recognize names from the police blotter. Sigh.
Serge @370 - My apologies! My RSS feeds are have piled up, and I've been working backwards, but keeping an eye out for your decorations. I'm back to "Something the Lord made" for you.
Thanks for sharing the Montreal information. John and I are trying to decide if we should go. I'm voting yes, of course...
Serge, I must know....
Have you put up your holiday decorations yet? I'm not seeing anything on your LJ...
Picture me, if you will, also very pleased that Professor Doyle is intact and able to relate her tale of woe.
I am thankful for the safety equipment that deployed properly.
xeger @ 77 Oops! Thanks for the correction and the link. Work intruded while I was typing and revising. This is YET ANOTHER example of why one should:
1) never edit their own work!
2) actually read the preview instead of just clicking it so you remember to post in a timely manner!
3) not abuse the exclamation point, even if one does tend to think using them and/or ellipses.
Janet Croft @ 78 Thanks, I'll check that out. I was overwhelmingly domestic this weekend, and kept shaking my head at the torn seams in 6 pair of John's work pants. I don't like sewing on Carhartt's.
I have trouble finding work pants for John that blow out in the crotch.
Serge, don't go there!
He needs something durable with a gusset, as he climbs utility poles all day long, and he puts his clothes through quite a workout. Carhartt's are the worst. He has some older Eddie Bauer that have held up, but they don't make that style anymore. John's 6'3" and fairly lanky. He's kinda built like Serge - tall and lean.
Any ideas?
I'll report on the AK races (will we be stupid enough to re-elect a convicted felon) later on tonight. Have to go home now.
Polls close in two hours. Please let my fellow Alaskans have not voted for Ted and Don and The Gov.
Please.
Headed home from work now. See you later.
Arachne #131 - Yes. The answer is yes.
I'm going to go look at Wonkette's drinking game. I saw it on a tweet, but haven't made it over there.
Crap. Sorry about the double post. I've been having network issues ALL DAY LONG.
Back to our anxious poll result watching.
Bruce Schneier#78 - Her popularity depends on who you talk to.
Most of my friends on both sides of the aisle find her embarassing.
However, if you read the comments sections of our local papers, any article not proclaiming La Sarah's magnificence is part of the vast Left Wing Conspiracy to discredit her snow-white self.
She'll be up for re-election (if she chooses to run) in 2010, and she'll have to go through a primary. She became governor by crushing the universally despised Republican incumbent in the primary. The Dem challenger was a nice guy, but not much sizzle. Sarah's got sizzle.
In private, she's not very popular with the Republicans and not only because she's stuck it to the Randy Ruedrich crowd, but because they know she's cunning at promoting herself but dumb as a box of rocks on the issues, and disinterested in the details of governing. That's per a staffer and some ex-legislators. She's not popular with the Alaska Native leadership.
On the liberal side, up until her nomination she wasn't loved, but she actually was vaguely bipartisan, which is a novel change for up here. Liberals didn't vote for her, but in a state that's historically conservative, they've had worse.
I don't know if she'll get re-elected. The longer she's in office the more time there is for her detractors (count me in) to show her hypocrisy and unsuitability.
However, lots of people are easily distracted by a pretty face.

Xopher @ #3 - You and me both, you and me both.
Except the pony part. I don't want a pony.
I sure as heck want Ted and Don to no longer represent Alaska. And if y'all don't mind, I'd be much happier if you let my governor come home. Just sayin'...
