I like it the way it is!

By the way, this

http://www.adamyoshida.com/2004/11/four-more-years-aka-take-that-you-sons.html

is what we're up against. (Didn't use html for the link because I don't want that guy coming over here.)

Whoops! Sorry Lois. I was so panicked by your link that I didn't read the rest of your comment. Thanks for acknowledging that "smaller" isn't small. (Also, I wasn't angry that you said smaller. Just panicked.)

that the FBI has uncovered evidence of potential terrorist activity in "smaller" cities like Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Kansas City, etc

Fuck!

I live in Minneapolis. Minneapolis is not a "smaller" city (at least not to me, anyway.)

I'm more inclined to believe it's a reference to "Blues Brothers" than "Oregon Trail." I've played Oregon Trail, and I still don't get it, though I got the others.

I thought it might be a play on some rap song.

Castiron - I don't get it.

That reminds me of this episode of the popular serial Cat Town.

Oh, and the music in "Child's Pay" is also really good. I have to wonder if the creators of the ad wrote and recorded it themselves; I imagine they couldn't use something already out there, for copyright reasons. If so, they did a remarkable job with it.

I thought "Hood Robbin'" was funny, but you're right, it's definitely not the strongest of the lot.

"Child's Pay" makes me cry harder each time I see it. I'm glad they chose that one for the winner. It is one of the most effective ads I've ever seen.
Posted on entry Waes thu Peter Jackson hael ::: December 21, 2003, 09:35 AM:
I've seen interviews with Jackson in which he explicitly said that there would be an extended version of RotK. The seven minutes of material with Saruman is at least part of it, but he's being coy about what else might show up. I'm certainly looking forward to it.

Faramir-Eowyn action! Woo!

(I really like the actors that play Faramir and Eowyn, as well as their characters. I'm really hoping to see scenes of them falling in love in the extended edition.)

The tendency of English is to treat "data" as a singular that has an even-more-singular form, "datum".

I think that the usual tendency among English speakers these days is to treat "data" as a mass noun, sort of like "rice" or "salad."

Or "time" or "water." My thoughts exactly.

My only assurance against data loss is to never have anything worth keeping

Heh. That's mine, too.

Tracy, know that it gets better.

It's so, so hard being in junior high, being 12-14 years old. My junior high years were absolutely the worst years of my life. But listen to everyone else here when they say it does get better. If you can make it through junior high, high school is much easier, socially. College is even better, and best of all is being an adult and having the freedom to choose who you spend your time with.

Kids are horrible when they're in junior high. I don't know if this is any consolation, but know that you're not the only one who has gone through this. Also, there is nothing wrong with you. The kids who are bullying you, they're doing it because there is something wrong with them.

The good news is, people grow out of it and become less horrible as they grow up. And, when you grow up, you're not forced to deal with them the way you are in school.

Please, please hang in there, get whatever help you can, and don't be afraid to reach out for help. I know it's hard now, but things are going to get better. Everyone who has lived through the hell of being bullied as a kid can attest to that. You're probably in the worst of it now, but things really really will get better soon.

Rachael, your concern is wonderful. Although, if the girl isn't getting teased in junior high, which are the worst years for any kid to go through, she'll probably be OK in high school.

Hell, I had greasy hair half the time when I was a kid. You grow up, and learn that normal people take showers on a regular basis.
Posted on entry More porn spam ::: October 13, 2003, 08:17 AM:
Anything that shuts down liberal blogs is probably worth money in the right quarters, too; this doesn't have to be directly commercial to be a net win for someone, especially if the existence of the porn links is an offence under some child pornography statute or other.

Anyone got a distribution-by-political -proclivities of this particular spamming activity?

Graydon: I'm glad I'm not the only one paranoid enough to have thought of this! Many of the blogs who got hit by this bastard mentioned they were considering shutting down their comment threads or closing up shop entirely.

What if the purpose of this spam is not to advertise porn, but rather to shut down a nascent, particularly effective form of political discourse?
Posted on entry Further Lolita alert ::: October 12, 2003, 05:12 PM:
Alan: Yes I know you clicked through to the site. Obviously. I did not, and apparently neither did Tracy. I had no desire to whatsoever.

All I was saying was that there was no need of you to get snarky toward the non-porn-savvy among us.

I think using the concept of "underage" girls to advertise porn is reprehensible (regardless of the actual content of the site or the age of the models therein). Do you disagree?
Posted on entry Further Lolita alert ::: October 12, 2003, 01:51 PM:
Tracy: What part of "All models are eighteen years old or older" don't you understand?

I'm trying very, very hard to refrain from swearing here. I'm guessing that Tracy, like myself, saw all she needed to see from the content of the spam comments, and didn't bother to actually click through to the site.

The comments advertising the site repeatedly state that it is "preteen" and "underage" sex.

Do you understand what "preteen" means? It means twelve and under.

That is worse than reprehensible.

Anyway, I hope you can understand if Tracy took the spammer at his word and was aghast and angry at the thought of child pornography. There was no need for you to get all snarky on her.

There should be laws against even advertising pornography as child pornography, even if there is later an explicit disclaimer stating the models are "18 years of age and above."

I'm sorry, but using the promise of "preteen" (i.e., 12 and under) girls to lure people into looking at porn is sick.

God *damn* it.

I just got hit again. 35 comments. The URL goes to the same site, but this time the person is calling himself "Preteen."

I am going to have to shut off my comments until I can get this fixed.

This person needs to be arrested, NOW.
Posted on entry Lolita, damn her ::: October 11, 2003, 11:35 PM:
Addendum: I've been getting all kinds of spam comments on my blog lately. One-word comments that say "interesting" or "cool," and then the commenter's URL is something like www.us-discount-insurance.com. AAARRRRGHHH! I've also gotten, on one post where I discuss an email service I really like, about 15 comments from Nigerians hoping I can introduce them to Bill Gates.

Somewhat more understandable, but no less annoying, are the "my-blog-is-awesome-come-read-it" spam comments. Trust me, if you leave this kind of comment, you can rest assured that I will not go read your blog.

I've got a DIY Movable Type setup and it has a few quirks, one being that I can't identify IP addresses.

I woke up this morning to find 15 Lolita comments. I was not happy. Deleted every one, wrote to the guy who hosts my blog to see if we can maybe finally implement IP banning.
