Posted on entry Porn turns you gay: the implications ::: September 24, 2009, 07:21 AM:
Uh, what? I can't even grasp this argument well enough to mock it.
Posted on entry Giving Christianity a Bad Name ::: September 03, 2009, 10:36 AM:
If I were a student, I'd view this as a chance for creative writing. It would be fun to build a sock puppet for them to spy on. What do you think? Street racing, collecting stuffed Cthulhus and transgender activism?

If I were too busy for that, I'd give them a valid password (to a sock puppet, of course) then change it after a week or so, in case they check it right away. Then if they ever wanted to spy on me, I'd know because they would have to order me to hand it over again.

If I had hypothetical Christian-school parents, I would have practice at this kind of game long before I got to high school. (My RW parents would have their hide for asking.)

My 23-YO roommmate moved in here never once having been to a dentist because his family could not afford it. His mouth was a painful lunar landscape and I insisted that he had to get it fixed. I was just sorting out that paperwork, so I have some good recent data on the cost of dental care for uninsured ppls here. This is from a dentist who gave us a pity price package:

$80 for exam and cleaning
$77/tooth for 1-surface fillings
$85/tooth for 2-surface fillings
$101/tooth for 3-surface fillings
$700 for a porcelain crown.

We managed to hit $1850 there. The periodontist who did the root canal charged $2200.

This was all out of my pocket, because he has no insurance at all.
Posted on entry Flu Redux ::: April 28, 2009, 12:08 PM:
The flu is making a pincers attack on Maryland, I see from the map. I will need to get a shotgun just to get past the lines of people at the store trying to buy toilet paper and bottles of hand sanitizer.
Posted on entry Flu Redux ::: April 28, 2009, 11:35 AM:
Is this flu going to create zombies? Because I need to know if I should add "shotgun" to my flu kit list.

Has anyone found any traces of astroturfing being organized as a mass effort? Or is the current best possibility bots?
Posted on entry Drug Warrior ::: April 01, 2009, 02:19 PM:
I think that making drugs boring would be a good thing. I don't remember reading about a kid being killed when two rival gangs of pharmacists had a shootout, for example.

Thou who hast made thy fruitbaskets fair
With flowers beneath, above with pretty bows,
And set thine bowls everywhere,—
   On table tops,
In TV rooms dim with many a show,
   In workrooms full of things,
And on the curving tables of every room:
Thou who hast taken to thyself the wings
    Of morning, to abide
Upon the secret places of the kitchen,
And in far rooms, where the children
Visit the hunger of afterschool snacks,
Waiting for breakfasters to come to thee
   In thy great place-of-dining!
To thee I turn, to thee I make my prayer,
   Plum of the Frigidaire.
Posted on entry The war on Oprah ::: September 15, 2008, 10:45 AM:
Oprah beat the Texas cattlemen in Texas and got people who had never had books in their houses reading. I'd put my money on her.

Posted on entry That Voodoo That You Do ::: September 10, 2008, 01:43 PM:
So far every time they have shut down the government (usually just a day or two), they have paid the employees for those days anyway by including the back-pay authorization in the continuing resolution or budget bill when it goes through. It's dramatic, but it doesn't save any money.

Well, that's a new kind of mistake. That comment was, I hope obviously, meant for another entry.

My parents had copy of the official report on the Watts Riots that had pictures of policemen beating and dragging people. (The local paper had produced a edition with their own photos illustrating the official text). I had an unrepentant 60s radical for my college polisci class and one of our texts was all about Cointelpro, the FBI program of infiltration by provacateurs. I have never had the luxury of living in a world where had the illusion I could trust policemen to protect my rights.
Posted on entry Biden ::: August 25, 2008, 08:21 AM:
There is one thing I would like to mention that might be useful when looking at the records of what people supposedly said on the floor of Congress: the congresscritters get to "revise and extend" their remarks before the Congressional Record is printed. That means that the lovely speech you read there could well never have been spoken. There is no formal record of who was sitting in the hall at the time, so even a speech that was actually given could have been given for the sake of CSpan to an empty room. The only thing that can't be redacted is the record of actual votes.

Just so you know when you are referring to the CR as a source of info on the track records of legislators.
Posted on entry Biden ::: August 24, 2008, 08:50 AM:
Gah. I shouldn't try to post when I wake up in the middle of the night with a headache. I will (probably) be thinking about Biden's vote on the Patriot while I a NOT voting for McCain or Barr. I'd bang my head on the desk, but that would make my head hurt more.
Posted on entry Biden ::: August 24, 2008, 04:45 AM:
On 9/11, Biden was in a park across the street from the capitol building being leaderlike, saying over and over that we couldn't let this change America because that would be letting the terrorists win, that we had to show them that our way is stronger and better than theirs. (I was there. I witnessed this myself.) On 10/25 he voted Yea on the Patriot Act.

That bothers me, a lot. Probably not enough to get me to vote for McCain or Bahr, but I will still be thinking about it.
Posted on entry Air Farce One (movie review) ::: August 17, 2008, 08:44 AM:
That was before we had to believe a president could have Alzheimer's or be just plain dim without a hand up his back, so our moviewatching minds told us that if the President thought of it, it was a good idea.

Who would I invite? The high school counselor who thought I was doomed to fail. Pwn!

Posted on entry The Internet, finder of lost things ::: July 23, 2008, 08:27 AM:
I am amused by Experts who say we are less social because of computers. I just sent a message to a musician who is out on the road somewhere and who I know only online about Thai peanut sauce, and to another musician in the UK about his EP that I just ordered online, to make sure the shipping fee he listed would cover his cost. That was, of course, after I Googled to get the correct name brand name of the chili paste I prefer and had a look at the UK guy's new haircut.
