Sorry, you break the social contract, you lose your voice in society. Yes rights are granted to you, but there's an implied part of a contract. Specifically - you uphold your part and don't break the rules that govern the society.

You don't like it, then leave.

Let's hope this issue doesn't reach our shores in America.

Conversation with my father this morning:

Dad: Do you know where I can get that paint that you can use to write on your car windows?

Me: Why?

Dad: So I can write McCain on my rear window.

Me: Why not just draw a huge swastika?

Dad: You know, you can be some kind of asshole when you want to be. (Said affectionately but with a hint of irritation.)

Yeah, that's how political conversations have gone between him and me since I first drew a breath.

My watch that I wear every day, given to me by my mother, I have marked some epic and tragic events with this timepiece

The Blessed Mother medal that was given to my father from a relative who purchased it in Vatican city and had it blessed by the Pope. I thought I had lost it when I was 14 while riding my dirtbike in a huge field. It was found three months later by a friends' daughter buried in mud underneath my parents' porch.

My wedding ring - the best day of my life (regardless of how much I might bitch about her) which led to two other best days: son 1 and son 2

I've looked thru Scraps' 99 albums, I have a few I can burn and send.

Is there an address someone can email to me?

I can get to it tomorrow. I have a midterm this evening. My prayers and good vibes go out to both of you.

That doctor needs a cockpunch.

Scott Taylor - I like the cut of your jib.

Seriously, sounds like a plan. Add some SEALs so they can go ashore and root out the pirates at the source, and you're golden.

Holeeeee shit! The things I have learned from visiting this page. I would like to buy that man a high quality bottle of vodka - and drink it with him.

Funny how life works - this guy makes an incredibly tough decision and gets the shaft - while people like George Bush move effortlessly from one mishap to the next.

Chris W

I lived in an apartment for many years, and the people who lived above me were a mother and her son. The son was the creepiest dude I have ever seen, and I'm not being mean. He had the look of your average mass murderer. He was also a night owl and his bedroom was right above mine.

So I wake up night, around 3 am and I'm laying there, listening. And I say out loud, to no one, "I know what a power saw sounds like. That's a power saw running. At 3 in the morning." I think he was slicing up his latest victim.

Sad to say, he freaked out one day and tried to kill himself and was committed.

A second story: freshman year in college, I didn't have class until noon and would sleep in. Every Tuesday, like clockwork, I would wake up to this clicking sound above my head. I could not figure what it was. About a month later, I'm walking out of my dorm and this slim, Gregory Hines looking dude walks past me, wearing TAP SHOES, and I yelled out, "That's what the fuck it is!"

I scared him pretty bad, and then explained myself. He apologized, but I was basically at fault for laying in bed until 11 every Tuesday.

Thanks for all of the reccomendations - I see many purchases in my future.

B Durbin - that's a bummer of a story. One way to get back at those two jerks, without being really mean, is to shove pennies in between the door and the doorframe of their room. They can't get out until you let them

Thanks Tania - I bought that book two months ago and have only read the one short story by Cory Doctorow "When Sys Admins Ruled the World" - the kids have been taking up my time. I'll check out the recommendations.

I love "end of the world" fiction: my most recent read was Earth Abides. I enjoyed Swan Song and The Stand, even though one is a rip off of the other.

If anyone has any suggestions, fire away. I'm no stranger to science fiction, but it's been awhile.

I'm not a bible expert by any means but there are some absolutely beautiful passages in there.

(How do you hide money from a Catholic? Hide it in a bible. - A Baptist joke I heard many times when I was in college)

I too would love to be able to see the different translations side by side. If that information was ever gathered together in one place, the fundies would poop their pants.

Lee and Lance - I'll bring a squad of Italian and Irish Catholics to the party, we can throw in with the Lutherans and crack some heads for the good of the country.

Why is Balink still employed? If he is this shady and faulty at his job, isn't there a system of checks and balances in place to kick his ass out?

I realize his party controls the town, but there has to be an opposition party that can hold him to the law.

If the religious right got the America they wanted, would they be happy with it? Could anyone be?

I wasn't giving advice to anyone Terry, I was simply stating how my family worked. I would never assume that what was good for me is good for anyone else.

Abi set me straight. I acknowledged her post. MPE left that message for me. I responded.

Your family comes first, last and always - that attitude helped both sides of my family deal with being immigrants in America and find success.

Family has allowed us to deal with all the crap that the world can shower down on you, and laugh about it.

Are they a pain in the ass? Sure. But those feelings pass. The strength of family will not.

Thank you, Fragano, for the words.

I heard Joan Osborne singing "Cathedrals" this morning on the radio - that was a great way to start the day. I was immediately transported back to the churches I visited when I was in Italy.

I used to "make" words and poems, but it's been a long time - if life ever calms down maybe I'll give it another shot

Fragano - I don't recognize that poem, but I like its imagery

Anyone else notice the press that Palin's husband has been getting about not cooperating either? What is his excuse for not showing up?
