Edinburgh has two of my favourite things: the David Bann vegetarian restaurant (vegetarians get to choose! Between more than two menu selections! And they're ALL good! And it's a proper grown up restaurant, with no home made rock cakes or plates of piled leaves! They serve wine, just like we were real people!!) and the Big Ideas plus size clothing shop.

Um... now that I think about it, there may be some connection..

I'm with the Paypal haters - except it's so convenient for small sums in different currencies. However it does infuriating things - like charging people automatically to renew subscriptions to Farthing magazine which went bust two years ago! I asked my web designer to remove the auto subscription function (which I hadn't asked them to install in the first place - I couldn't think of an idea more likely to annoy potential subscribers after all!) and I asked Paypal to remove the function, and I did all the things they asked me to do but occasionally it *still* tries to swipe money from people. I try and keep an eye on the account and send any money back but I just found a couple of ghost payments sitting there so I used them to boost the amount I just sent to the fund.

When I was a drama teacher (don't ask) I was trying to persuade one of my less able students that it might be a good idea to, you know, go to another class or two, maybe pick up a couple of qualifications, so he had a back up plan *just in case* he didn't become a star. He argued passionately that this was a counsel of defeat and that there was NO QUESTION that he was going to make it, and allowing himself to be distracted by mere qualifications was insulting his art.

He made it as far as the chorus line of a West End musical or two so maybe he was right. What do I know?

I confess I've never heard of tomatillos before - does anyone know if they have a different name in the UK?

Nicholas Waller #34: I was at the back of the crowd at the Parliament Square end of Whitehall for the two minutes' silence and the Last Post. I couldn't see a thing, but just being there fair made you quiver. I blogged it here: http://couchspudprotem.livejournal.com/43464.html
Posted on entry Princeton's Running a Survey ::: October 31, 2008, 05:49 PM:
Well, I put non-US (because I'm in England) and found it rather more challenging than I'd expected because of my inability to remember where any of the States were (Virginia is the triangular one on the right hand side, right? In which case why is it labelled VA instead of, oh, I don't know, VI or something?) And of course it wasn't till half way through that I remembered you use the colours the other way round from the rest of us, so Obama would be expected to win the blue states, and not the red ones?

Um, sorry Princeton, but I think I just broke your survey!

One of the guys who works for me did a piece of work before I even asked him for it and, when I thanked him with added kudos for his psychic abilities, sent me a joke email with his predicted lottery numbers.

You can guess the rest. I only won a tenner, but I can't think of a better way of using it than this. After all, I live in a country where my cousin has just had brain surgery, free at the point of use, paid for by all of our national insurance contributions. I recommend it! (Um... not the brain surgery, but the national insurance thing)

Actually the message I took from this movie was that, sooner or later, you guys would get embarrassed enough about diversity issues to have a woman VP. But of course, when the crunch came, all the furious backroom activity would be about who was *really* in charge, because, you know, after all she was only a gurrrl...
