There's also something of a pattern to the candidates who win the
elections that buck the current pattern..
It seems to me like the split is caused one one group gets fed up
enough to tip the balance between the parties.
But it's really easy to read more into patterns like this than
actually exist. I once saw David Hackett Fischer in a lecture sum
all presidents to that time into a pattern of "Liberal" followed by
"Conservative/Sleaze" follwed by "Clean Conservative". But it took
a little shoehorning.
