Xopher, I'm sorry to hear about your job. I hope a good job shows up in a timely fashion.
Here on the eastern edge of Kansas, it's been cold, damp and gray. Our average temp for the first two weeks in Oct is generally between 71-75F. This year, it was 57F. Today, the high seems to be 46. We haven't seen a killing frost, so the ragweed is still doing its thing. But there are rumors of sunshine and highs in the 60s by Sunday.
Lovely poem, abi.
abi, the quilt is wonderful and the quilting is awesome. I like the texture it creates. And the essay provoked so many trains of thought... I bought melt and pour soap base and the necessary accessories just yesterday, because I need to make something, and that type of soapmaking scratches the itch without creating another project that I "should" be working on.
And since I delurked once, I'll also say that I was momentarily tempted by the new stuff that promised to make eyelashes more adequate, since mine have always been thin, sparse and blonde (although not quite as blonde as my eyebrows) and prone to falling out excessively. But then I read that it could also change my eyecolor to brown and I realized I didn't need nicer eyelashes that badly. I like my eyes blue and would prefer to keep them that way.
Delurking to say I love you to all the folks who hang out at Making Light.
Marilee, How wonderful to see you here!
I don't remember the last time I went somewhere for New Year's Eve. My tradition has become trying to stay awake long enough to see the New Year come in on the US east coast, an hour before it arrives here in Kansas, although I don't always make it.
I miss the New Year's Eves I spent in Germany, where the awesome fireworks made it impossible to sleep through midnight, even when I tried.
Best wishes to Caroline and Keith.
Happy New Year to all.
Fragano #54 I'd agree that it's moderately evil, but as Constance #55 said, a venerable, venerated U.S. custom. My impression was that the outhouses were normally turned over in the middle of the night, when they were less likely to be in use. I also think there were other, more elaborate, tricks, but I can't remember now what they were.
Fragano, they only do tricks if you don't give them treats. Soaping windows and turning over outhouses were my father's explanation of what tricks might be performed if treats were not provided
I've had two groups, for a total of 7 trick-or-treaters tonight. Since it's 8:31, I don't expect I'll see more. I feel cheated! I bought lots of candy. I even changed the burned-out porch light so I could turn it on. The two groups showed up before I even got it turned on. But the folks at work will be happy to help with the candy on Monday
