Nader claimed that there was no difference between the Democrats and the Republicans, and that he wanted the Republicans to win. He took actions which were clearly aimed for that goal (such as campaigning in swing states).

Now that's something I hadn't heard. I wasn't in the US in 2000, so I can easily imagine missing it, but in all the "Nader good! No, Nader bad!" arguments I've read and heard, no one has made the claim that Nader wanted the GOP to win, said so, and deliberately tried to make it happen. (For instance, campaigning in swing states could have been just campaigning where he thought he could pick up votes; I'd want more evidence than that of his intent to precipitate a Bush win.)

If that's true -- and I'd like to hear more if anyone has info -- it changes my perception of Nader and the Greens considerably (and for the worse).

Pericat, your link requires flash and my computer is old and crotchety. Is it about the meat industry? I meant plant farming, the kind that could be compared with Kevin's garden. But in any case, I didn't mean to imply that a backyard garden is a bad thing. I'm all in favour of (organic) backyard gardens, for those who have back yards.

I feel perfectly fine in comparison to preachy bicycling urbanites who have their produce trucked hundreds of miles from the central valley.

Lots of urbanites, preachy and otherwise, are fed by one truckload, and the produce comes from farms that take advantage of economies of scale, both financial and environmental, that backyard gardens cannot match. In the case of organic produce, the farms also meet much stricter standards of environmental impact than many, if not most, backyard gardens.

Of course, we preachy urbanites are not usually talking about people living in semi-rural areas, growing their own food and driving only seldom when we say that suburbanites should fight their fossil fuel addiction. :-)

would these people show any qualms about beating up little old ladies?

<voice class="fake" style="tough guy">They will if I'm there.</voice>

Seriously though, I love the "teams of little old ladies" idea. Most of the little old ladies I know are as tough as nails anyway, but you could add a few strapping lads to keep an eye on things if you thought violence was likely.

There are only two ways to guarantee you're not going to lose an election. One is to not have an election. The other is to rig the elections.

You're scaring me. I won't be a citizen by 11/04 -- I wonder if I'll be eligible to volunteer at a polling station?

nice guys are gonna finish last.

I am not sure I agree. It's not necessary to fight as dirty as the GOP, because the Dems have one big advantage: facts. They (OK, we, I'm a pinko lefty) can tell the truth and prove it is on their (our) side in a majority of issues. What really is needed is a concerted effort to get this information to the public, in a format designed to effectively counter the Oft-Repeated Soundbite Lie, which has been a right wing votewinner as long as I can remember.

If you're taking requests, it would be great to have the sidebar recent-comment links go directly to the comment in question, rather than to the top of the thread in which it appears. (This behaviour may be browser-specific: Moz 1.4/MacOS 10.2.6)
