Larry@11: Here in DC, a very common type of takeout place is a "Chinese food, chicken and subs" place. To further complicate things they also often carry bulgogi and pizza. The Chinese food is universally abysmal, but the other items are frequently not bad.
Linkmeister@98: The advent of widespread hands-free kits make it difficult to gauge whether the person gesticulating and talking loudly to empty air is crazy or on the phone, which can be a significant impediment to the urban lifestyle.
Lee@5: My mother has been getting phone calls from someone trying to collect a debt from an ex-boyfriend of mine from about five years ago. She, being no fool, has been telling them that she has no idea where he is or how to contact him (which has the benefit of being more or less the truth; I know how to get in touch with him, but she doesn't have his number or address), but it blows my mind that they'd call her nonetheless. He's never lived at that house, I haven't lived at that house in over ten years, and as I said above, we broke up five years ago. How any of that translates into a right for them to call my mother over and over and harass her for his current phone number or address is a complete mystery to me.
I've got tickets to the swearing-in, as well as one of the balls, and a couple of other parties I promised to attend this week. I bought a fancy dress and made appointments to get my hair and nails done and everything. So naturally, yesterday I came down with the flu. Cue much gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair. Here's hoping I manage to throw it off by Tuesday...
TripIt is handy for keeping all your various electronic confirmations and schedules and so on in one place. You can either enter stuff manually or forward them the confirmation emails, and they'll automagically add them to your trip calendar. It's especially handy when you're travelling with or to meet other people, because you can add them to the trip and share your itineraries with each other. My brother and I usually meet up in Las Vegas about once a year, and we use it to coordinate flight times, hotels, and so on.
Meg Thornton: You can also use meat tenderizer on a jellyfish sting, which is what I remember the lifeguards keeping around when I was growing up in Hawaii.
Albatross, can you name a time when most American women did not work?
I tend to agree with the assertion that the US is, at least recently, a center-right country. Unlike Jon Meacham, however, I see this as something that needs to change rather than a reason to throw up my hands and declare any and all liberal reforms impossible.
Regarding "I feel" (which I do say a lot, although I am not from the West Coast) - was anyone else subjected to a lot of training/classes in high school about "I-statements" and especially the use of "I feel like" rather than more concrete statements? Because I got a lot of that as training in "effective communication" or somesuch, and it's a hard habit to break.
Seconded for the Airport Express. I've been using one for a couple of years now, and it 'just works' with both my PC laptop and the boything's Mac iBook. I can also confirm that they're definitely configurable from a PC. After years of frustration with Netgear and Linksys routers, the reliability of my little Airport was a huge relief.
