All the Z-ing has made me think of Zardoz, but the notion of Sarah Palin in hooker boots is both too horrifying and too plausible to contemplate for long.

Somebody wanted "The Tay Bridge Disaster." I've found it, with a treatment worthy of the material.

You're, ah, welcome.

Newspapers banning access to most of the Web for their employees? Why not? It can't make them collapse any faster, and it might hamper the employees' searches for other jobs. Sure, it's stupid, but they're already chest-deep in tar pit.

Codpieces with holes *are* banned. Which is just as well, half the point of a codpiece Is that people can't see what's behind it properly. (The other half of the point being the point, of course.)

If Jesus had built the church as a beach house instead of a fortress, I *would* be happier with it...

Sandwiches? For THIS? Somebody bring a Weber grill and we can do steaks, grilled portobello mushrooms, all that good stuff.

CGI has just fallen into the Uncanny Valley, that's all. I suspect it will never climb out of it, because no matter how well the computer geeks render the shiny bits, the real actors and the real props on the sound stage are still trying to react to a Thing That Isn't There.

Or maybe learning to react correctly to the Thing That Isn't There will become the single defining skill for actors.

It's nice that they have a course on surviving their "Escaping From Captivity Course." I wonder if it's a prerequisite?...

Abi@whatever number: The difference between Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Kids (yes, it's "Kids" here, with mixed troops) where I live is that the local GSA is pretty explicitly Christian, while the local CFK are painstakingly not-affiliated-with-anybody. Aside from that they're very similar; they even share an office/meeting house.

Xopher@117: If you do that, you'll never get the full story; all you'll have will be Clifton's notes.
Posted on entry What is it with the zombies? ::: February 21, 2009, 12:22 AM:
Dangit. HP beat me to it. The zombies that terrify me are the ones that shamble about, mumbling things like "evolution is just a THEEEEEEEOOOORY", or "enTIIIIIITLEment refooooorrm."

Suzanne@159: The way to deal with co-workers who come in spreading contagion is not to hint. Stand by their desk, far enough back to not get sneezed on, and YELL at them. Be offended! Be grouchy! Admittedly, it's probably too late with respect to that guy's particular microbe, but it'll make the next half-dozen people think before they bring in THEIRS.

It can be tomorrow's lunch. I bet it will work pretty well the next day to put some meat mixture in one tupperware thingy, some noodles in another, and combine-n-wave.

Now I've got to think about who sells good apple cider here in Washington.

I wonder how much Kinkade would charge to do a painting, in his typical style, of a peaceful Iraqi cottage being blown to bits by an artillery barrage?...

Note that I'm not bothering to ask "whether."
Posted on entry TIME magazine to readers: "Interact with us" means nothing more than "promote us for free" ::: February 01, 2009, 07:18 PM:
The lack of comments is a feature, from Time's viewpoint. Wasn't it just last spring that Joe Klein said that he had neither expertise nor the time to learn anything about a Supreme Court ruling, but plenty of time to pontificate about What It Meant? And didn't that result in a thorough roasting by Glenn Greenwald, and over a thousand comments in Time's blog all saying "You're an idiot, Joe Klein"?

Of course, they could do it the way the Wall Street Journal's blog does, and only display the comments that agree with them, but that would be work.

And just yesterday I was reading an article that noted there haven't been any fatal airliner crashes in the US for seven years. Hopefully it'll still be true at the end of the day.
Posted on entry Deep Thought ::: December 29, 2008, 03:09 PM:
If the law made the use of the phrase "asking for it" or variations thereof by the defendant during an investigation or trial for rape an admission of guilt, or made it grounds for extended sentence upon conviction... sigh. It probably wouldn't help.

Tempting notion, though.
