CarrieS@344:

Are you on Windows or Mac? I just grabbed the C# and Erlang ports of Solitaire, and would be happy to compile a Windows version for you.

Although I think what you actually want might be a deck-of-cards simulator so you can watch the magic work as it happens. That would be a fun project, but I can promise no firm delivery dates. Maybe there's something already out there.

io9 and Gizmodo are both part of the same company (Gawker Media), so both being down at once isn't completely surprising. Indeeed, this from io9 just now:
If you are having trouble loading io9, you are not alone. All of the sites in the Gawker Media Network are suffering from extreme slowdown. It has been happening all weekend, and is a problem that originates with our web host. Our tech team thought they had it fixed last night, but unfortunately the evil nano bots attacked us again this morning. The tech team is working nonstop on getting io9 back up again. Thank you for your patience.

Serge: I volunteered to do a party supply run, but I must now amend an "if possible", as my schedule continues to evolve mutate.

I'll try to make it to the party at least, as I have to the best of my knowledge never met any MLers (except Bruce and Hilde, who live about a mile from us - and even then it's been a while) and this situation really ought to be resolved.

If possible.

Michael@99: I'd cruise on your cruise line.

I've been on two cruises, and the smaller, older ship from the first cruise was my favorite. Alas, it is now in (I believe) Southeast Asia with a different company.

I didn't much care for the floating Las Vegas hotel the second time, though I did come out a little bit ahead at the casino. There was no place to stand in the bow and watch the ship come into port the last morning. A ship should feel kike a ship.

Hey, speaking of commuting to Westercon: the Metro light rail has two stops within a block of the Westercon hotel! So we locals can easily commute.

I'm local. My wife and I are planning to commute to Westercon, at least working around the holiday and fireworks when Tempe throws a giant drunken block party. Said block party is not my cup of tea, I'm afraid.

If we avoid the Fourth, I'll be happy to provide logistical support for a Making Light party.

I do. Once a month or so, for the sad pathetic fun of it. And I wash my hands afterward.

I am at a filk con in Seattle RIGHT NOW. These will be sung - I already perform Abi's Zombies On A Jet Plane locally. Braaains!

There's a songwriting contest at this convention in which the following seven words were drawn at random from a basket full of submitted words and phrases:
diatomaceous
random
meretricious
melon
broccoli
black hole
licky (yeah, not technically a word)

And the idea is to use them in a song, to be presented tomorrow.

I wrote a song about Agatha Heterodyne, my wife wrote one about Adrian Monk. Just to show off, I used the words twice: once in the order shown above, the second time in reverse.

I'll post mine sometime after the performance phase of the event.

I'm making an online comic strip.
And a sign for my good friend the tarot reader.
And an interstellar spaceship (in Lightwave).
And another dozen arrows.

At work I occasionally get to make cool software, but I work in a job I don't really care about.

I make people laugh, too, and that may be the most important thing I'll ever do. I'm cool with that.

As a friend of mine often says:
"What a great idea! We could make dozens of dollars!"

H'mm.

Carry only the recipe and make the fudge as a family activity at your destination?

I'd probably FedEx[1] it myself (guaranteed next-day delivery, dropped off at FedEx as late as possible). But I'm used to shipping packages to New Zealand, so a next day FedEx package wouldn't seem too expensive to me.

[1] Or other overnight service.

This page might have been vandalized. There's an excerpt from "Tempting Faith" badly embedded into the end of your original message.

H'mm. Can't resist tinkering with the scansion a bit:

I saw something big and squamous
devouring my Mommy late last night
She didn't see me creep
through the doors to have a peep
She thought that I'd been eaten by Cthulhu of the deep
But something squamous devoured Mom instead
it started at her feet and finished at her head
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
if daddy had only seen
Something squamous in the woodshed
devouring mommy last night.

I left the last line alone because it's funnier, but to maintain scansion it'd be:

Something squamous devouring Mommy last night.

Back to work now, theoretically.
