Ten thousand more zombies coming
We're finally on our own.
We made Indiana but they're
All dead in Ohio.

Serge @ 295: Speaking of the making of things, has anybody else ever seen 1977's documentary Gizmo?

Why yes! Many years ago on TV, by accident, and in a somewhat altered state. I missed the beginning, and spent quite a while wondering what on earth I'd stumbled across. I remember it as being a remarkable film - I'm surprised that it hasn't been released on DVD.

Cat Meadors @ 380: Tonight my kid made music, on stage, in front of a huge crowd of people. Ok, so it's nothing I did, [...]

As my wife insists: whether it's nature or nurture, either way we parents can take credit!

R.M.Koske @ 310: I think his main point is that marriage is for mummies.

Bruce @ 293:
As far s which is more complex, I haven't tried to compare the algorythmic complexity of various genres* of music

As you know Bob, the seminal paper in this field was written by Donald Knuth back in 1977.

Jason B @ 247: The greatest cover version of "Eleanor Rigby" was recorded by The Zoot in 1970. (Supposedly branded as such by McCartney himself.)

Mez #449: Not only have the first two seasons of Bones been shown free-to-air in Australia (in Melbourne, at least), but season one is available on DVD. So, yes, spoiler alerts, please.

Interesting note: Programs have traditionally been shown on Australian TV anything from months to years after their release overseas. However, in the last few weeks, several upcoming shows have been advertised as "Streamed direct from the US". I think someone has finally noticed the Interwebs.

Marzipan tastes exactly like almond paste.

Exactly. Nasty. It's what the puritanical chocolate companies put in their chocolate assortments, to demonstrate that there must be some evil hiding in anything that seems all good.

Martin @ 129:

To me, God is a Why and science is a How.

(What, Science doesn't get a capital?)
This phrase has always bugged me. "Why" seems to have two main meanings - "what circumstances lead to this", and "for what reason did someone do this". The former is just How again. The latter assumes the existence of a purposeful being, which doesn't help to justify religion unless you're already a theist.

With regard to remixes and mashups, some of you might enjoy the following live track from Mike Keneally:

in which the band plays (more or less) "Tomorrow Never Knows" while Mike plays "And Your Bird Can Sing".

Since his name has come up, I feel obliged to quote Joss Whedon's letter to (www.)Whedonesque(.com) about the Canadian Firefly fan film, "Into the Black".

Quote:
I hate to have to do this, but this has become a legal matter.

Sirs --

"According to article 16C-12 of the M.P.A., no entertainment (intended for television, radio or internet broadcast) based upon existing licensed intellectual properties may in any way be allowed or approved of by creator(s) of said intellectual property. Further, upon notification of such unauthorized entertainment, said creator(s) is in no way legally sanctioned to comment upon same. Creator(s) shall in no way refer to said unauthorized 'show' or 'site' as "wicked cool" or "bitchin'." Examination of the ship (herein designated "Samsara") shall not be in any way legally awesome, and creator(s) shall not in any contractually binding way grin. The perpetrators of this entertainment shall not have fuzzy feelings, nor be, under penalty of fine or imprisonment, all up in themselves. Dag, yo."

I hate to throw cold water on a well-meaning enterprise like this, but that's the law. Meanwhile, I in no way eagerly await the first episode or think it's about damn time this universe was expanded just a little bit more. However, I think I can safely make one or two suggestions to help. One: Have the characters get into all sorts of shenanigans on a regular basis. Two: Always remember that the integrity of your universe's reality must be maintained unless you think of something cool. Three: Have Chekhov get really old.

Thank you for understanding my precarious legal position on this. I wish I could be more supportive, but I am a machine. An android cannot cry, except that nancy-boy The Vision, who, let me tell you, you don't wanna see "Terms of Endearment" with that guy, you can't even hear the movie.

Sincerely, The JossWhedonbot, model 421-C-aplhadog-12(defective).

Obviously, different authors/creators have very different opinions about the reuse of their creations.
