I've just done a Google search on the phrase "people have sunk into such intellectual decay as to find" (because it's ten words), and lo and behold, it pops up in several other places, as part of the same sentence as here. Interesting.

"The rich in this country do none of the work, and pay none of the taxes. The middle class does most of the work, and pays all of the taxes. The poor are there just to scare the shit out of the middle class. Keep 'em showing up at those 'jobs'."

Check out one of Steven Den Beste's most recent posts, and you'll see pretty much the same reasoning: WMDs didn't matter at all, and hey, taking out an evil regime was just icing on the cake. We just needed to blow something up.
Posted on entry "Respecting your enemy is smart. Shrinking in awe is fatal." ::: December 02, 2003, 12:08 PM:
That is good advice. I get tired of seeing Bush and Rove described like guys sitting in underground bunkers petting their white kitties as they plot the destruction of the world, without the realization setting in that the guy petting the kitty always loses.

Why am I thinking of Lloyd Dobbler right now? "I don't want to buy, sell, or process anything as a career...I don't want to buy anything sold or processed...or sell anything bought and processed...or process anything, sold-bought..."

Thanks for this update. I was wondering.
Posted on entry Another good question. ::: September 07, 2003, 02:35 PM:
I seem to recall Bush, last fall, suggesting that the rebuilding would be up to the "International coalition" or some such thing, even when it was demonstrably clear that the war was pretty much going to be a unilateral US effort. "Other people are going to have to clean up our mess" has pretty much been the subtext of the whole Iraq policy all along.

(Hell, come to think of it, that's been the subtext of EVERY Bush policy all along.)

Well, if you're into good last lines, check out Jim Capozzola's latest:

And so does my bitterness at the Universe increase ever so slightly upon learning that what for me has resulted in a pear-shaped body and pasty-white flesh (chaining myself to my keyboard and living on pizza) has brought this guy accolades.

A pox on the Universe!
Posted on entry It's hard to know what to say, really. ::: March 04, 2003, 09:30 AM:
It's OK, really. It's all part of the plan, just watch. Once we've taken Iraq over, then those pesky Saudis will be dealt with. (Insert evil cackle here....)
