Indeed. Why does CloseCombatTraining.com hate America?

I'm very sorry to hear it. I hope she'll make a full and fast recovery; my best wishes go out to the both of you.

With the national weather service warning that people who stay behind could face "certain death", I hope that the evacuation is more complete than that. I'll keep fingers crossed for those in the city, for sure.

#88: That's exactly the line I was thinking of. Amazing what we East African Plains Apes can get up to.

And for the 1776 crowd, I've got to quote my own favorite exchange:

Franklin: Calling me an Englishman is like calling an ox a bull: he's grateful for the compliment, but he would rather have restored what's rightfully his.

Dickinson: When did you first notice they were missing?

Congratulations to all involved with the organization; here's hoping that smoother waters are ahead. (Also, I'm guessing that the Agnew vote didn't come from a Davis voter, but no matter.)

He's a nebbishy naval architect from Earth, who's secretly moonlighting -- for God! She's a sexy superspy with a spaceship in her suitcase. Together, they're fighting crime, falling in love and racing across time and space to prevent an evil dictatorship's attack on the phone company from causing Armageddon!

Marc G. # 78:"Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Simarils"

Or the part with the big dragon-attack on Lake-town could be "Loch, Smaug and Two Smoking Nostrils".

(Sorry.)

I had no trouble with any of the listed sites from my office in Manhattan (with a non-Time Warner connection). This would seem to be another indication that the problem's with Time Warner rather than one of its upstream providers.

A vigorous good riddance to Gonazles, who disgraced so much more than himself. In Chertoff's case, it should probably be "pick any three" -- here's hoping that the Congress remembers that it's an actual branch of government and refuses to confirm another toady for AG.

Jim, thanks for all of these posts.

I'm thinking of doing a post which is just my first aid bag, with an explanation of what everything is and why it's there.

I hope you do write a post of this sort; I'd be very interested in reading it.

Re "science fiction in the national interest"

Bruce Schneier and others have frequently criticized DHS for dealing in "movie plot security"; perhaps now it's going to expand into "novel plot security" as well. I'm sure Halliburton will enjoy their no-bid contracts to defend us against spheres of antineutronium dropped into the earth's core, invasions of felinoid aliens and so on.

I look forward to the press conference where the mayor and the chief of police congratulate each other on their ever-so-serious and dedicated approach to the War on Terra. (It'll be delayed by a couple of hours so the police have time to blow up a few suspicious-looking microphones.)

I'm one of the people who skipped the link because it was a pdf. Having seen these excerpts, I'll make sure to read the rest. Thanks!
