That message looks very much like a standard cross-stitch sampler message. So to me the inclusion of the whole alphabet could easily have been a passing of a test to indicate that he was now a journeyman able to inscribe the alphabet for other jobs. No magical explanation necessary.

Don't be silly. A *man* wrote it. It must be very, very significant, and nothing like the semi-literate jabber of women biding their time between housecleaning, cooking and having babies.

Nothing will make you an unbeliever in rumor faster than hearing your own speculation repeated back to you as fact the next day.

albatross @ #101, do you really think this story should have focused on more common child safety threats? I'm sure moms and dads have never ever heard about making sure baby sleeps on her back, or to take the blanket out of the crib, or not to let little Elmer touch a hot stove. We need more of those.

The story is not a "Top Ten Childhood Accidents YOU CAN PREVENT" listicle in _Parents Who Have Attenuated Attention Spans And Fourth Grade Reading Levels Because Of Sleep Deprivation And Stress_ magazine. It's a depiction of life's drama -- the tragedy part.
