No way, no way, no WAY is an in-disgrace cadet going to be put in permanent command of the flagship with the rank of captain. Chain of command would have him fragged before he gets back to Earth. He might get out of the doghouse, he might get the rank of Ensign on a better ship than he might otherwise have deserved based on his Academy record. Anything more than that completely tosses me out of the story and makes the next movie's premise suspect sight-unseen.

As it was pointed out to me, did Uhura have to have straight hair? And I agree with all those who have pointed out that pretty much all of the female characters are simply male accessories. The reboot did not have to utilize a 60s approach to sexism.

IMO this was a good action movie and a bad Star Trek movie. I'm in denial. I am not ready to have 40 years of Star Trek universe simply deleted like bad fanfic.

I'm in the middle of NaNoWriMo and was looking for the name of a person who fixes wagons. Couldn't think of it. But, I found a handy website called VisuWords that provides a graphical "mind map" approach to words and related words and so was able to find the word I was looking for: wainwright.

It remains to be seen just how long this particular "semi-permanent" disgrace will last. History does not provide many examples of Republicans being punished for their crimes. The last thirty years have been nothing but pardons, bailouts, and amnesia. It's not illogical for Republicans to assume that this will continue.

This is the very thing that terrifies me about the current crop of Dem presidential candidates. They ALL talk about "reconciliation" and "moving forward" and "bipartisianship" when they should be talking about turning over every stone and throwing every corrupt politician in jail. Yes, that would get some Dems, too, but probably just enough that the exercise wouldn't be seen as one-sided.

If the ruling class doesn't experience any consequences for illegal action, they'll just keep acting illegally. The pardon of Nixon was the first step to allowing the Nixonian cancer metastasize and we're suffering for it today. If we don't eradicate the problem now (to beat my own metaphor into the ground) we'll be suffering for it again in the future.

Stefan @63:
With Bush, we'll get some trite expressions of sympathy and some bluster about building the bridge bigger and better.

Actually, Bush spent about 1 minute with sympathy, then the rest of the press conference he spent blaming the Democrats for not passing his budget the way he wanted it.

That and the Republican governor of Minnesota vetoing a gas tax that would have helped pay for infrastructure. I wonder how long the higher taxes = bad equation will hold up when you add death and destruction to the math.

There are obviously times when age or status or other situations cause consent to be questionable. And, frankly, the fact that it was all down on video tape makes me question their maturity over all. But I agree with Graydon #43 that sex isn't in and of itself harmul, but we sure seem to want to treat it that way -- especially in regards to those under 18 -- in this country.

I strongly urge all of you who are thinking about this topic (and why else would you be on this thread and reading this far down the comments?) to read Harmful to Minors by Judith Levine. Caution: it actually considers humans under 18 to be, well, human.

::sigh:: I am SOOOO glad I still use WordPerfect!

Eric (#50)
The difference between how WordPerfect formats documents and how Word does it is this: For WordPerfect, a document is a stream of text with formatting tossed in, kind of like rocks in a river. For some formatting, from the point where that format code goes, until it is overridden by another code, that formatting is in effect. So, you can change the indent of a series of paragraphs, or the margin for pages, by going to where you want the new indent to start and adding the correct format command. From that point on, all paragraphs will be indented, until you put in another code to out-dent.

For Word, the concept is one of a hierarchical series of containers: the paragraph, the section, the document. Change to formatting take place ONLY in the "container" you are currently working in. So, for indenting a paragraph, you have the insertion point in a paragraph, hit the Indent button, and that ONE paragraph is indented. You have to select EVERY paragraph you want indented (or, indent manually every single one). If you want to change a margin for a series of pages (or the header information) you have to insert a section break to separate the old container from the new one.

Also, paragraphs carry over formatting information from the paragraph before it. Example: when you hit Enter at the end of that paragraph you indented, the next paragaph will ALSO be indented: it carries the formatting over from the paragraph you are in to the new paragraph created. That's why it is a great idea, when you open up a new Word doc, to hit th Enter key about half a dozen times. Then you will have that many "normal" paragraphs to go back to when you make a specialized paragraph.

A few more things (I used to train people on both Word and WordPerfect -- I stuck with WordPerfect):
-- Styles are your friend. Learn them. Use them.
-- Word sucks at large documents: it was created for the single page letter while WordPerfect has been aimed at law firms and handles multiple files and large docs effortlessly
-- Save often and have multiple copies everywhere. Word seems to corrupt it's own files more than anything I've seen

::grin:: and now I get to go back to using WordPerfect. Have fun, you poor saps!
