Posted on entry Boycott Black Friday at Wal-Mart ::: November 26, 2009, 05:30 PM:
On Black Friday I won't be shopping, unless you consider a U-Haul rental "shopping." Last night I finished my first phase of training and start next week with the second, which is on-the-job training. Tomorrow I take a U-Haul truck to Chattanooga and load up with some furniture and boxes and bring them to my new apartment.

John Scalzi reports that the SFWA and the MWA have joined the Romance Writers in condemning Harlequin. Harlequin now says that Horizon will not have the Harlequin name on their imprint.

Like that's going to make everything better.

Open Threadiness: LiveJournal is down for the count. In addition to not being able to see my favorites, I'm unable to see the newest one of Teresa's Sidelights. Maybe it'll be fixed by the time I get back tonight.
Posted on entry It was twenty years ago today ::: November 10, 2009, 12:29 AM:
I remember the year.

The hope, enshrined in a photograph of the prime ministers of Austria and Czechoslovakia removing the barbed wire between their countries, blended with the fear of a Tienanmen crackdown. I kept up with the news, searching for more items of the collapse of the Iron Curtain. I thought that it would happen, but the final collapse was breathtakingly fast when it happened.

Here's to the freedom of all who are oppressed in the here and now. In particular the Iranian people.

I wish that the thread that had been closed had not been closed. I understand why it was needed, but it seems like it stifles debate.

I'm not concerned with his remarks; he'll either go over the edge or he won't. It's a myth that there are few liberal commentators who can get down and dirty with the far right. Air America had a number of them. What has me concerned is the impression he gave, in that YouTube video I saw, of not being willing to debate but instead harassing a fellow Congressman. The question is can he hold his own in a debate? Or does he just posture?

I don't want to defend Keegan, but isn't he nearly eighty? His editors should have been backstopping him more to prevent senior moments from going into print.

In other Open Threadiness news, I'm in the middle of my first week of training in Huntsville. I haven't been able to go online as much as I might have liked, but I'm able to touch base now and then.

I would point out to your friend the lack of humor on such conspiracy theory websites. I don't have the links at hand, but go to YouTube and see if video's of Penn and Teller's Bull***t are applicable. I know they tore into 9-11 conspiricies like a hot knife through butter.

I've seen this posted in blogs of all stripes. I imagine that all but the "yes but," people agree with Philip. My dad was of Philips' generation, and served during World War II. I would like to think that he would fully support Philip's thoughts.

Lila @ 710---hopefully my browser won't split before I post.

I've been to the Space Center a couple of times. What may happen is that I won't visit after I move down there. I hope I don't get that jaded.

Have you been to Unclaimed Freight in Scottsboro? I check out the bookstore there every time I go down for Con*Stellation.

I agree with your post. I am not a lawyer but it sounds to me like some charges ought to be filed. I think a DA could make a case for criminal negilence at the very least. I'd also suggest obstruction of justice since Ray was quick to leave and refused to talk to the sheriff.

Of course this news story is competing with the Balloon Boy. I'm not waiting up nights for justice to be done.

Posted on entry Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize ::: October 11, 2009, 12:46 AM:
This is a stark case of apples and oranges. King's efforts for racial justice and peace were well known by the time he won the Nobel. What made me unhappy when I learned of it many years later was how hard it was for the Atlanta establishment to embrace King after that. He should have had a ticker tape parade down Peachtree.
