Ugh. I'm looking out of my window and everything is a dirty orange colour. We're having a dust storm. In Sydney. I haven't seen anything like this in the 12 years I've been here.

All my windows and doors are shut but the stuff is getting in through the ventilation holes in my walls. I can smell and taste it. It's asthma time!

For Robert Jordan fans:

Paul Biba at Teleread reports that the entire WoT series will be made available in e-book format. He quotes from the Macmillan press release:

The Wheel of Time series is one of the most highly requested series on Kindle, and they are finally becoming available to fans as ebooks. Beginning on October 27th, Macmillan will release one ebook per month, beginning with The Eye of the World. The full text of the books has been retypeset to better accommodate the ebook format and all original illustrations and maps will be retained in these new releases. We’ve also commissioned new cover art for each book, and I can announce the first four artists now: David Grove, Kekai Kotaki, Donato Giancola, and Sam Weber.

Only to that person. I can't see the entire statement as dissing someone who does find value in that type of fiction.

I'm not bothered by the "I hate depressing books" thing, because I really do. But that's my quirk. I don't insist that (general) you hate the books that I find depressing, I don't insist that you agree with my assessment of a book as depressing, and I don't see you as a lesser person if you like books that I find depressing.

What I'm trying to say is: unless someone goes on to add "...and if you like them you suck" or similar sentiment, he/she is probably stating a fact as it applies to him/herself and not making a judgment on your reading or writing tastes.

Moving your old hard disk to the replacement machine may work. I've successfully done this with OEM XP HDDs in the past, and the only thing I've had to do was install the new motherboard's drivers.

You may find Spybot Search & Destroy of use in your malware battle.

I wouldn't be surprised to find bug bits in their capsules. Or whatever.

Operation Clambake (http://www.xenu.net/) was founded some time between 1995 and 2000, during the a.r.s. vs $cientology wars. It is updated regularly and remains a valuable resource.

Unless chewing gum has also been banned in Malaysia (and I'm not sure of this, having been away from .sg for nearly 10 years) it is actually very easy to obtain the stuff. You just drive over the Causeway (around 1.5km), going through Immigration Control on both ends, and pop into any petrol kiosk, provision store or supermarket.

David Harmon, Caroline:

Back in the day, live Tubifex was displayed in a large shallow dish or metal plate filled with water at the aquarium supplies store. The worms clumped and moved exactly as shown in the video.

If you teased the wormy mass apart with a stick or similar object (I must admit I used to play with my fish food), the clump would re-form fairly quickly.

David Harmon: The worms didn't seem to breed very quickly, but they lived in the gravel and were mostly inaccessible to the fish.

Tim Walters #63: You can also load samples onto the Tenori-on. Synth programmer Damian Taylor describes how he used the machine during Björk's 2007/2008 world tour on the Yamaha site.

Ah, Tubifex worms. I used to feed live ones to my goldfish and tropical fish many years ago, but then the worms eventually colonized the gravel and fouled the water, necessitating more frequent changes.

There was also a concern among aquarium enthusiasts that given the locations that these things were collected from, we might be introducing all sorts of nasty microorganisms into our tanks.

I eventually switched to Daphnia and mosquito larvae.

David Harmon @ #648:

My own rice-cooking method assumes that the water required is directly proportional to the amount of rice as measured by the cup, e.g. in my case one cup of rice requires 1.5 cups of water. This (IME) works with basmati, long grain and Thai Jasmine rice -- and any style of cup I've cared to use.

Once you've figured out the proportions that suit you best, you shouldn't have to worry about the markings in the pot or the potential loss of the cup.

I'll put in the good word for the World Community Grid which runs several humanitarian projects (cancer, dengue, rice, AIDS, clean energy, proteome folding).

The research is conducted by public or non-profit orgs, and results must be released to the public domain.
