Not to hijack a thread, but why all the hate on Scientology? They seem nice enough. Sorry to appear stupid, but everone seems to take it as given that they are evil and I am wondering why.
KeithS @35: OMG, it does work thru plastic! Now I can take my 'iFriend' everywhere!
Ken @ 15:
You made me laugh with that last line. Just yesterday I prepared a steaming tub, lit the candles, turned on the soft music, and prepared to steep myself for a while. As I was stepping into the tub WITH MY IPHONE IN HAND, I suddenly realized that it might not be a good plan to mix bath water with a cell phone. Never mind that book I was reading on the Kindle iPhone app - I switched to a nice printed and bound book instead.
Is it wrong that I immediately thought of the Goauld?
I am apparently in the minority here as I work in IT in an office where women outnumber men. True, we are all COBOL people,so maybe the gender gap is more relevant to the new languages.
I have to say though that I am studying for a Master's in Software Engineering and the program is exactly 50/50 between men and women, and we are all trying to learn Java together and equally sucking at it, no matter our gender.
As for the importance of QA, I can speak from the perspective of trying to fix a major production error only one week ago that should have been detected in UAT, but the tester only verified messages halfway thru the process without following them through to the customer - IT didn't catch it as it was a affecting existing processing, and the new process worked fine, which is all IT checked. Never underestimate the importance of a good tester!
Katster @23: I would think any topic on the evolution of fandom should take into account Twitter, where one can read updates, opinions and thoughts from your favorite authors, actors, etc. I am sure in the next 5 years such networking sites will grow ever more pervasive.
Any particular type of fandom you are writing on?
#27 My Mom's first ever visit to NYC, we were driving up a block near Riverside Park in thick traffic and watched a man push a wheelchair (with great effort) up the hill. When we finally got to the light we watched as he sat down in the chair, put out a sign and a cup and began to ask loudly for donations. Years later we still laugh about it.
I recently got an email addressed to 'Dear Lady' advising me to click the link below to update my
"Flasy Player". I'm embarrased to say I am not quite sure what a flasy player is, or where mine is located.
Del@28 -- in the situation we were discussing, the bank allowed the mom to use their money - with the understanding the money plus interest would be paid back. They fulfilled their part of that contract. Now they want the money they are owed. The estate is legally obligated to pay.
I KNOW that I am not responsible for debts I did not make. But my Mom, who always pays her debts on time, would be moritified in whatever hereafter she resides in(if any), to know that she left anything owing to anyone. As an obligation to MY MOTHER, not the bank, I would pay her debts. Sorry if that was unclear.
Now my Father, on the other hand, who never met a credit card he could resist and believes you don't pay a bill till the third "final notice", would probably be a different story. Thankfully his much younger wife will most likely have to deal with that situation!
The flat stomach ad is really pretty gross. I keep encountering it on livejournal, and each time I find myself carefully adjusting the scroll so I don't have to see it. There is no other ad that triggers such a knee-jerk reaction on my part. I don't know about the 'fail' though - most ads can simply be ignored, but this one sure has got a lot of folks attention.
Sitting on the subway one weekend thinking of all the things I hated about my job - and looking up at the ads and spotting one for a computer training school. 12 years later still in a tech job I love and going skating Friday with the best friend I met at that night school.
