We have a similar building, the Western Auto Building, it's only 11 stories high (or so, I just looked at an Internet photo and counted). You obviously don't have winds like we do here in Kansas City, that thang would be ripped of the building and possibly anything it was attached to might be too. In the spring we are subject to some fairly violent weather, in relatively minor storms, 50-60 mph gusts are not that uncommon. AS you may guess, even fabric-covered billboards (one of the newer, easier technology billboards) are tucked in very well on their boards, the thing on the Flatiron looks like it has lots of nice loose edges to catch a gust...

We have a phone tree system here in the SF club in Kansas City partly because we always feel email should be just about the last way to hear about a death. And we still have some club members without email.

This is a sensitive topic right now, we had one of our local club members pass away last Saturday/Sunday overnight, he went to bed and did not wake up. So the week was sad and strange, especially because our club Christmas party was last night (Saturday).

Sigh.

I just read all of The Amazing Dr. Darwin by Charles Sheffield on a road trip a week or so ago and was amazed and admiring, once I got over the fact that it's more of a vignette booh rather than a novel. There is not much on the cover blurbs that indicate what it actually is. Well worth a read, it's like Sherlock Holmes, only about 100 years earlier.

With great trepidation and fear, bought a copy of the Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett on said road trip because I finished Dr. Darwin before we got to St. Louis ( we went to Bloomington, IL). I'm about a third of the way in (I'd be in further, but I'm working like a maniac at the job that pays my salary AND we've had a visitation/funeral that Jim had to officiate at mid-week -- totally unexpected and very sad.)

I think I'm gonna be buying a lot more books. (with no 'dammit' factor involved.) I am enjoying it.

I'm surprised he didn't ask that everyone who placed such a poster on their house to be arrested and put in jail. apparently if one has a ticket to the convention BUT has something on their person that offends like a t-shirt, they can be freaking arrested and go to jail. Because Mr. Bush is a coward and a liar.

I'm soo glad I don't live in New York. And I'm so glad y'all are going up to Boston now and avoid the unpleasantness.

On any given day, the Kansas City Star can guarantee at least one error. Their most common one is homonyms, I've seen hair when they mean hare, etc. And the more technical the article, the more likely a misstep.

In fact, my mother-in-law, upon retiring from her position as a technical editor / scientific secretary at U. Kan. has taken it upon herself to write the Star every time the screw up. Good hobby.

One thing I have to ask (forgive ignorance...). Are you allowed to make changes to this townhome, like repainting and redecorating? A lot of media portrayal, both real-life (HGTV) and drama (Goodbye Girl for one) has people completly redecorating their apartments/townhomes in NYC.

In our area, you are severely fined by the landlord if they even have to repaint. The three places I rented I got screwed out of the deposit even though I had a professional cleaner in at least one of them after I moved out. They claimed they had to pay to clean them.

This is a mystery to me, but since I've owned my own home since 1982, not an issue (we did have to pay about $800 to a professional painter after we allowed renter/friends to repaint our Prairie Village house they were renting--they had indicated they were renting to purchase at the front of the deal.... and they used strong colors like plum...)

don't know where to comment, but a while ago I made a comment that I sincerely believed that Saddam and bin Ladin had really not ever been in contact.

Someone here told me I was seriously deluded. 'poor poor thing' was the tone.

It appears my take was true. Just think about their modus operendai, their beliefs. Saddam believed he was a modern leader leading his people in the right direction. Bin Ladin is a religious zealot who had no time for folks like Saddam Hussein. Cheney really, really wants to believe it, but I do not think it's a real thing. Sorry.

Just ny 2¢, I don't remember who pooh-poohed me.

Sheesh, someone has filed a class action lawsuit for all of US, "who should be offended that the Janet Jackson act caused America to look bad to other countries." (that's a loose quote, but the gist) I don't think she realizes that our weird, puritanical attitudes toward sex make the other countries think that's all we obsess about. If she could possibly win, we'd all get around $250. (Kevin Olbermann commented that this would be like getting a special tax refund....)

Xopher, not going to go there. I always vaguesly wondered how they practiced ritual in the Southern Hemisphere (I'm a solo-practicing Dianic Wiccan....)

Interesting post, gives me thought.
