I grew up in various Asian countries, so I was exposed to a lot of fruits you can't get here. But since my mom's family lives in Manila, I grew up with calamansi. You can squeeze it over many noodle dishes, you can heat the juice to help a sore throat feel better...it's great stuff. When I lived in Singapore, we had a calamansi tree in the front next to a starfruit tree, and in the back, we had a pineapple bush that would occasionally produce one tiny but very sweet pineapple.

Apparently there's about a full hour of cuts that will be restored for the longer version, including Mouth of Sauron (radically changing the tenor of the final scene with Aragorn's "For Frodo" charge), and many other explicit Aragorn-to-King moments. I'm hoping that the extended edition will help the movie's pace - for such a long movie, it was choppy and abrupt except where I wanted things to progress a little faster. The parts where I wanted to linger flew past before I had a chance to get properly weepy.

I'm still thinking that the first movie is the best, because of its intimacy and because of Boromir, but I don't get any of my Rohirric poetry that I love so much, and that I think Bernard Hill speaks very well. It's nice to segueway from the books and the movies into reading Heaney's translation of Beowulf, and now I'm pondering which translation of the Edda to get.

John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee was a series character that had the same sort of issues that Spencer seems to have (I must pick up the Spencer books, I think). After a while, his military experience is only referred to, whereas I think in the earlier books, it's specifically Korea. Sue Grafton has explicitly kept her heroine Kinsey Millhone in booktime, and doesn't push her forward. No internet for Kinsey, alas.
