A clarification on what was going on which brings the matter into focus:

Someone apparently sent Fox News the entire report including the classified addenda, which are not in general distribution and do contain real information that actually needs to be classified as it deals with sources and methods.

There are slight differences between the Fox version and the officially released version indicating that it is probably an earlier draft and they are trying to track the source of the leak.

If they don't read the report, they can't comment on it which reduces sources. If they read it and comment they can be punished.

Of course I seem to remember this technique being addressed in the last Harry Potter book and the result was rather the opposite.

[sorry...had to take a break...the picture of Donald Rumsfeld as Dolores Umbridge...ah, puns]

This is another incompetent attempt to control what cannot be controlled. The barn is empty, not even the mice remain, shutting the door is pointless.

How about remembering the Cessna that crashed on the White House lawn and caused the Secret Service to deploy Stinger missiles to the roof of the building.

Exactly how many bad WWII movies have featured an heroic pilot deliberately crashing his aircraft into the enemy target?

What is supposed to be the giant leap of understanding between driving an explosives laden truck into the Marine barracks in Lebanon and using an aircraft?

In her defense, Dr. Rice is a Soviet/East Europe wonk and the Soviets didn't do things like that.

First, I was in the Air Force and on flying status from 1966 to 1974 so I am familiar the routine for the period.

Anyone who entered the service at that time automatically had a six-year commitment to the Reserves. Bush was in the Reserves as an E-2 [Airman] with a job title of Apprentice Administrative Specialist, clerk for the civilians.

If you were drafted you had two years of active service and four years of inactive service. You received a separate discharge from the Reserves at the end of six years.

Bush received a direct appointment as a Second Lieutenant, which had no effect on his permanent rank as an Airman. Normally direct appointments are given to people with specialties; doctors, nurses, vets, lawyers; but Bush received one from the Texas Guard based on political connections and his choice for flying training.

Not showing up for service is not Bush's biggest problem. He failed to take his mandated flight physical and was grounded. He was no longer a qualified pilot and this action should have resulted in his reversion to his permanent rank and duties.

By failing to take that flight physical, he made himself worthless to the National Guard. He was in the Guard to fly, and he chose to stop.

Everything else is extraneous.

The Iowa veterans came through for Kerry, the only veteran in the race. He now inherits the media scrutiny that was focused on Dean.

The labor unions were split between Dean and Gephardt, which was unfortunate for both. Dean should not have run the negative ad, and hopefully will avoid doing it in the future.

Edwards and Kucinich had made a pact that they would automatically be the number 2 choice for the other, so Edwards got the Kucinich vote when Kucinich fell below 15% in a precinct.
