I liked how Will managed to work in his little dig at the Democrats -- "But if any Americans want to be governed by politicians who short-circuit complex discussions by recklessly imputing racism to those who differ with them, such Americans do not usually turn to the Republican choice in our two-party system." Such an ungainly construction he has to haul out when he could just have said, "This administration is actually guilty of the various transgressions I have been attributing to the Democrats for the past few decades."

This line of argument appeals to me way more than does "Bush is a bad Christian because he does not believe Iraqis have souls". Mark's post just about knocked me over when I read it this morning; yours would have done so too had I not just recently read Mark's and so had the points in mind already.

I've been thinking lately that Disney's next feature film ought to be "The Passion of Mice" with Mickey playing our savior.

Another vote for whiskey in tea! In general, spirits in hot tea are very, very nice of a winter's night. This concoction is called "grog" by sailors and old ladies -- at least if it is made with rum, but I think whiskey and tea qualifies too. (And veering off topic, rum mixes very nicely with iced tea too.)

I was working for Amy's Bread, near Times Square, when this redevelopment started. (Well actually I guess "when I became aware of this redevelopment".) This was in '91 - '93, my key memory of this period is that the city commandeered the signs above the doors of vacant theaters (--what are these signs called??! I am wanting to say "marquis" but am sure that is wrong...) and filled them with weird poetry and conceptual art. Also in the undergroung passageway from the Times Square subway station to the Port Authority, there was a series of Alka-Seltzer signs that said (reading from east to west), approximately "Woke up... So tired... If late... Get fired... Why bother... With the pain... Just get up... Do it again." The final sign did not, however, say "Alka-seltzer!", it just had a strange painting on it. This whole thing is one of the more surreal bits of my time watching the city.

I never drank rye -- how does it differ from bourbon? I started drinking bourbon about a year ago after years of only Irish whiskey and I like it a lot -- I'm pretty cheap and do not go in for expensive whiskey. Cheapish bourbons I can recommend: Ezra Brooks, Old Grand-dad, George Dickel.

I'm on board for the "Dean as head of the DNC" idea. I had been trying to figure out where he would fit into a Kerry administration and couldn't really see him anywhere but at the top -- I think he would make an excellent party leader.

Sennoma -- I think your dislike of "if I would of" stems from a misapprehension; the usage in question is "if I would have" -- a perfectly reasonable substitution for "if I had".

Following up on Fox Molder's point from yesterday: The "domino theory" could still work; we have created anarchy in Iraq and there are signs that it could spread to Turkish Kurdistan and to Syria (in which regard see Perle's comments that an American intervention against Damascus is not out of the question) -- next we can move on to Iran and eventially Saudi Arabia and the religious Right's goal of total destabilization of the Mideast (in preparation for the Rapture) will be well on its way to fruition.

Hmm funny, it reminds me a bit of Dylan singing "Positively 4th Street", with the obvious caveat that Tripplehorn (can that really be somebody's name?) is no Dylan.

Not "left-wing" but NY Newsday used to be at least reliably liberal; I have not read it in a few years though -- it is currently only available on Long Island and in Queens, where I no longer live.

Alan -- yes, but if you use the "And the rest" version, you miss out on that cool "The Mo-vie Stah!" voicing -- it's just, "The Mo-vie Star, and the, Rest" -- not nearly as much fun. I must admit here that I am not sufficiently old to have caught any of the Gilligan's Island episodes in their original airings so I cannot speak with authority. At least one particular type of authority. I was happy when I found out a couple years ago that there were black & white episodes -- the island and the castaways photograph very nicely in black & white, don't look quite as much like wallpaper.

Hmm, actually I guess that's probably not a "fill" coming as it does at the end of the song. But whatever... The song is not complete without it.

There's a problem with singing "Gilligan's Island" to the tune of "Amazing Grace" or "HOTRS", as I discovered last night trying to do it. What do you do with the fill? (I speak of "With Gilligan... The Skipper too... The Millionaire, and his wife... The Movie Stah! The Professor and, Mary Ann, here, on, Gillig-an's, Isle!") It won't fit! The melodies have only verses.

Code-generated palindromes, though, strike me as just silly.
