It occurs to me, too, that excessive restrictions on women's
activities after a death in the family is also a sign of
socioeconomic status. Clearly, you can only devote time to
"mourning art" and the post-death seclusion if you don't have to
put food on the table and keep a roof over your head. All of which
puts it in a similar category to the restrictive corseting of the
era, Chinese foot-binding, and any number of other restrictions
that have been placed on women throughout history.
