I just finished rereading Vinge's _A Deepness in the Sky_, the one
about the artfully translated Spiders, and I realized that Bush
& Co. have improved it greatly since I read it last.
When I first read it in what, 1999, I thought Tomas Nau and the
Emergency were cartoon villains, evil just for the sake of it, but
this time through I saw the real life parallels.
In particular, there is one scene where the humans are in deep
shit, it's about to get a lot worse, and Nau is already planning
how the coming mass deaths on his watch can be used to consolidate
his power.
