Hi! Hoi polloi here, with known history of venting. Felt an urge to comment, for Henry & I have a history. He came close to banning me from CT for intemperate remarks. Also was quite pleased by PNH's post.

Dr Maturin was indeed mistaken, I read Drezner & like Drezner, and Drezner is no wingnut. But the wingnuts are unreachable. Henry and I suppose Kevin perhaps believe the moderates like Drezner are best approached with calm, friendly, well-reasoned argument. I, and maybe DeLong believe the fence-sitters and "adult Republicans" need a well-aimed series of swift kicks.

Look, I feel for Henry and his desire to avoid hating. I am a hater, and it hurts to hate. I feel much guilt for hating. But they outsource torture and want to steal granny's retirement fund. They need some hating.

They like to lie. They enjoy it, enjoy getting away with it, enjoy getting over on the press, "Prove it, suckers. Dare ya to contradict."

Patrick's title says it all. Watch Bush, at almost any time. The smirk, the sneer is constant.
If it isn't there, it is because he is deliberately trying to avoid it. Look at Bush's history. Getting over, pulling a fast one, deceiving is the man's reason for living.

Having just picked up the 16 CD Complete Prestige collection, gotta say Trane. Coltrane spent half or more of his career as a typical hardbop sideman or session player, was able to adapt to anyone's style(Milt Jackson?), and yet inspire his colleagues to new heights. And seemed to get along with everybody. If you don't want to go as far as 16 cd's, try the two albums he did with guitarist Kenny Burrell.

Get back with ya on Dante or Chaucer, but Sonny Stitt was the only guy who was good on electric saxophone, so gotta go acoustic.

Old guy here, who grew up in the era of Lafferty and Disch and Effinger and Ballard and the wilder days of Aldiss. Was trying to explain Lafferty to someone last night. I really don't follow the field anymore, so don't know what is being published. But somebody who defined the field in the years of "What Entropy Means to Me" doesn't have many rules or justifications.

Just lurking, but I think Gardner Dozois wrote one of the finest pieces on reverse aging, a short-short 5 pages: "Morning Child" ( I think, not going thru the collections right now).

A little piece of poetry and compassion I would stand against anything. Anything.

Impressed to meet someone who has met Joanna Russ.
I am easily impressed.

I have used her anecdote about the King of Denmark wearing the Star of David ("Yes, I am a homosexual") several times in straight groups to an amazingly great effect. It has always elicited compassion that surprised even the professed homophobes themselves.
