#116: Joined the Ravelry group, thanks!
Those of you who are as charmed by the knitting related littledee.net stuff as I am can get "We Rogues of Wool" shirts or a tote bag ( link to order swag). The shirt had to be mine.
My lunchtime knitting comrades at our LYS were mightly amused by "We Rogues of Wool" as well, I had to squeeee at them.

Thanks PJ! I needed a science geeking close to home fix.

Yeah, that was the scene I was thinking of. Sounded like a lot of the California (and most particularly Bay Area) bashing I've heard over the years that assumes our eventual falling into the ocean is a just punishment for our depravity, etc. (insert other similar dreck).
Unfortunately in my most paranoid conspiracy theorist moments, I can well imagine the current DHS not needing much provocation to drop the hammer on us.
re: 58
As a fourth generation native of the SF East Bay, this rings true for me. Cory's choice of that bridge and that tunnel is on the money. If terrorists wanted to frak the Bay Area over, that's what to target. The aftermath of Loma Prieta is nothing in comparison.
I don't have my copy at hand, but wasn't there also a nasty vibe about DHS's measures being justified because the Bay Area is somehow un-American?
The end of the book had me dreaming idly of a reborn Bear Flag Republic.
"So keep fightin’ for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don’t you forget to have fun doin’ it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin’ ass and celebratin’ the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was."

We've got a lot of work to do, but why should it be an onerous chore?
#7 - I remember getting California Admission Day off school; it always seemed weird to have a day off right after things got started, but I didn't complain too much.
As for el Cinco de Mayo, as long as we remember what the actual event was that is being celebrated, I figure it's ok to have fun on it. Perhaps it's also a more easily marketable name ( el Dieceseis de Septiembre doesn't roll off my tongue as easily, but then my high school Spanish is thirty years rusty).

Teresa, take her up on the offer, give into the allure of handknitted socks! I started making socks a few months ago, and it's not only fun, it's wonderfully portable. I haven't learned magic loop yet.
re #27, now you've got me humming "They Got the Mustard Out"!
I don't trust Lieberman at all, and if the D's in the Senate have any smarts, they'll be very wary of him. I hope Webb pulls it out.
Oh no, this is terrible. I only met him in person briefly and enjoyed reading him here. My thoughts go out to everyone he touched and most especially Elise. May his memory live forever unwithered.
Happy birthday, here's to fifty orbits around the Sun!
My first response to the news was unprintable. His funeral sermon wasn't scary, but he's got a long record of being the Enforcer, so unless the Holy Spirit works miracles, you're going to find me watching this papacy from the sidelines.
I went up to University Avenue in Berkeley a couple of weeks ago to look at salwar kameezes (spelling for the plural?) in all the Indian import shops, because I'm going to a Indian wedding a week from Saturday. I had fun trying on the stuff, and got happily lucky by finding that the one that looked best on me was the cheapest even *before* the 50% off sale (so I got the costume jewelry and shoes to go with it). I'm not certain if this has the same impact for the individual seamstress that buying bespoke clothing from folks on eBay would, but I was happy with the haulage. The outfit will get some repeat use at Wiscon and at Worldcon.
My very GOP brother (who has a portrait of Shrub on his mantel, to my dismay) and I actually agreed recently during my most recent visit that Ken Lay and his fellow crooks need to be made completely destitute and live under a freeway overpass. We were actually considering being charitable and letting him use a shopping cart, but after these most recent gloat-laden disclosures, I feel comfortable in speaking for my sibling as well as myself. No Safeway shopping cart for you, Kenny-boy!
