I have four rose "bushes" at my new house. No, make that six. Evidently a couple were mowed down in the past, and they sprouted up (but haven't bloomed yet) this year.
One of mine on the east side of the house (amid the mint bed) has grown quite a bit this year, but hasn't bloomed. It had what looked like powdery mildew, so I sprayed it with Safer Soap and the white spots went away.
The other rose in that bed is red, and very fragrant. It had been cut down to the ground and sprouted this year. It's not even a foot high yet, and keeps blooming.
There's a bush in the back that has very small pink roses, but little to no fragrance. It's pretty, but I was a bit disappointed at the lack of smell. It's in a rather shady spot, but bloomed profusely (and is still blooming in spots.)
On the west side of the house is a dark fuschia pink rosebush that bloomed this spring and hasn't bloomed again.
I know nothing about roses. We've always been a wildflower family. Is there a basic website for basic care that anyone would recommend?
Alison,
Thanks for the information! I'm not sure if the priest was in on it or not, because he should have known better. Alas, I didn't bring home a bulletin to prove my point or I'd pursue the matter, because I'm already mad at them for wanting to ruin our nice little stone church with an addition that looks like an army barracks.
And evidently, it didn't appear in the bulletins at the earlier mass, only the one I went to. Curious. I would like to know who slipped them in.
Graydon,
In my county of Ohio, we still fill in the little circles with pencils. So it's not at all electronic.
However, rumor has it (well, people calling in to radio stations on election day) that at one particular voting station not far away (and still in my county) people who had stood in line until the polls opened at 6:30am were turned away because the machines were broken?! I guess they had no pencil sharpeners?
Evidently they took names and numbers and told them to come back later. Me, I would have stayed in line. And I don't know how that ended. I hope everyone who wanted to vote got to vote, but I do know of one person who thought standing in line for 30 minutes somewhere else was too long and left.
As for Ohio voting, considering that my small town has something like 13 churches now, it wasn't a surprise that Bush won. There were certainly more Bush signs than Kerry signs around.
I think a lot of it was the 'moral values' bit, because I had to explain to multiple people that voting NO on issue 1 did not mean it would make homosexual marriage legal. And the churches were saying the opposite, when, in fact, Ohio had already passed a law that made it illegal. This was a amendment to the state constitution! And it passed!!
What really made me mad was going to church last Sunday, opening the church bulletin, and finding a flyer proclaiming "vote NO on Issue 1!!" that was paid for by the local "Community Values/Family Friendly" people who have already raised my ire years ago over a magazine at the library. Isn't that illegal to do?
(Catholic church, btw.)
Michelle, I had been trying all morning to get here, and it took until 1:30pm for it to work. So you're not the only one. (And I'm at work.)
I could be drafted. My sisters could be drafted. And I can't imagine my stick-thin younger sister surviving basic training. I doubt I could either, in truth.
I'm apprehensive about these next four years. I'm not a political person, but I voted. And everything I voted for lost.
Southern Ohio got rain Thursday night-Friday afternoon, and then the temperature plunged twenty or so degrees. It's in the mid-50s at the moment, lovely damp and cold.
Re: Brooks Brothers
I wonder if that's how the manufacturers came up with the Armani Jeans line? Although the one shirt I found at Goodwill does seem of good quality and has lasted for a while.
The color discussion has been fascinating. It does make sense that there's a group of people behind the next season's colors... not that I care.
I buy 80% of my clothes at Goodwill anyway. And since I'm such a cheapskate, it's probably good that I do that since I end up with a higher quality of clothing than I would buy in the stores. I can't turn down cashmere sweaters from Harrods for $1.50. :)

For our other fans, another copy of that book turned up in Australia going for $139.60 USD. (Hey, smart publishers, this is the Bad Blood series. Rights available, and a fourth (unwritten) book all plotted out and ready to sweeten the deal.)
Um. The paperbacks are going for that much? Oh my. You know... I read a story set in that series in an anthology years ago. I emailed Ms. Doyle and asked her if there were any other books in that series or maybe it was that they were being listed as out of print and I wanted to know if they would be available anywhere. She emailed back to tell me that a bookstore near her house (iirc) had the first two books, so I called the bookstore and had them mailed to my house. I'm not sure if I picked up the third book later, or what... I'll have to see if I have it. Obviously I should have bought more copies. :)
I loved those books. Still do.

Nancy:
I once sold a really ratty paperback copy of the US edition of Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett for $20 on ebay (before it was reprinted, I guess.) It wasn't even the first printing of the paperback. I was... amused. So it does happen.
There's also a copy for $5.95 at Powells.com
Thanks, Teresa! I just placed an order with LaserMonks.

Sara,
I can sympathize. I think I'm the only person in the United States who doesn't like Madeline L'Engle. (sp?) I tried to read one of her books once and miserably failed.
I just taught myself to knit three weeks ago. And I agree; it is a form of meditation. And although I only know one stitch at the moment (I'm trying to learn how to purl), I'm almost done with another scarf. (This one is for me. I gave the first two away for Christmas presents.)
It's fun. Although I'm wondering about the interchangeable knitting needle sets I see (especially the Denise ones) because the two lots I've bought from ebay don't have all the sizes I need. Has anyone here used the interchangeable sets?
And elann.com is great. Very fast shipping, as well.
I taught my younger sister how to crochet, too, and she's crocheting hats for all her friends. I figure it gives her something to do while she's sitting in front of the TV.
