*carefully separates Ms. Booth and Darkrose*

And as the designated moderate in this trio, I promise to get Hendak to open the back rooms at the Copper Coronet tonight so you two can go at it. And then we can go back to being living proof that three people with very differing politics can still be close friends.

Let us mourn before you start the "pull yourself up by the bootstraps, already" routine. Please?

I was #335. The counter on my ballot box had leaped from 298 to 335 while I was filling out my ballot.

Polling opened at 6:30; I put my ballot in around 8:00. Busy place.

This is the first time I can remember seeing cops cruising by, staring at the line. The black family behind me in line were Not Pleased.

Uniting sports superstition and politics:

Since 1936, if the Redskins win their last home game before the Presidential election, the incumbent has won. If they lose their last home game before the election, the challenger wins.

The Packers are playing at Washington on Halloween.

Go Pack!

I have a hunch that "the Enemy" is Christian Right code for Satan

It was in the corner of the CR I grew up in.

Graydon, re not these morons: Absolutely.

Patrick, I did read the whole essay. I found some of his suggestions amusing. In this area, small groups meeting in members homes are far more likely to be splinter groups who think the Southern Baptist Convention is too liberal than to be accepting and nurturing.

I know there is no perfect community. I'm lamenting my own half-healed wounds as much as I'm casting stones at my subculture.

I don't think of a church as a place of worship. Worship can and does occur everywhere. A church is a community and, in my experience, is almost always a community that offers its members two choices: march in lockstep or be shunned. Some things you don't dare express doubts about.

A church where the hunger for truth is honored, and people can disagree but still love each other and share a plate of tacos.

I'd be happy if I could honestly trust any church to fulfill just this one.

Partly, it's my own issues (I grew up a fundamentalist); mostly, it's the weight of two millenia of mind games in the service of power and control.

That I live in North Carolina, where such mind games are so much a part of the fabric of the subculture, doesn't help.

But knowing that there are churches like RLP's out there somewhere is comforting, even if I never manage to find one.

The artist wants the sculpture's owners to apologize? I assume for complaining about the misspellings?

I should insert a joke about engineers and spelling here, but I'm too busy boggling.

To add to the list of lost fiction, I've been trying to recall a short story I read years ago about a near future society where a "none of the above" option had been added to Presidential elections in the form of Franz Kafka. Most of the story was the characters talking about how there was no plan in place for what to do if Kafka ever won the election and how Kafka's percentage of the vote had risen steadily with each election since he was first added. At the end, the news came in that Kafka had won a majority of the popular vote.

Except for some "daylight" fluorescents,. They seem to be relabelled Gro-lites; be careful of them.

I believe they're supposed to be clearly labeled.

I've had a lot of trouble finding those. I keep hoping for a less expensive alternative to the UVA-UVB reptile lights I have to buy for Gamera.

Regardless, Richard is right about the UV blocking ability of glass and plastic. It's why reptile keepers have to use lamps; too little gets through windows and tank sides to do the animals any good.

Er, Skwid, I was thinking from the POV of the sleeper. That one's not particularly functional. For sleeping, that is.

However, I have passed it on to a friend currently in the middle of a contentious divorce. I hope to hear of the soon-to-be ex's reaction soon. *eg*

As a turtle keeper, I can confirm that unless you are using UV-rated fluorescent bulbs (usually sold in pet stores), you don't need to worry about sunscreen. A standard fluorescent bulb doesn't put out enough UV to protect captive reptiles from vitamin D deficiencies.

Paul, assuming you're not limiting your poll to pro writers, here's a datapoint for you.

My preferred reading material is alternate history. I write (and admin a community site for) fantasy gaming fic. I've never been pleased with the results of my attempts to write althist; some essential spark in the characters seems to be missing.

Yes, Larry, I meant a house that would allow me to enjoy the experience of being in the middle of a hurricane.

I have quite enough junk of my own. I don't need an extra few people (and all their electronics) cluttering up my house even more. ;)

An NBC crew hung out with the owner of this house in Pensacola Beach last night.

I want one.

I wouldn't have minded experiencing Ivan in the USS Alabama, either.

(Really, I can't understand why conservatives think he's one of them. Kerry's a better conservative than he is. My corgi's a better conservative.)
A redefinition of terms that's been going on for a couple of decades now.

When I reached voting age and started keeping up with politics, I was a moderate. I agreed (and disagreed) about equally with both sides. Now, I'm a liberal. And all without much of a change in my actual positions on most issues. :D

Ricing? It's something you do to potatoes--you put the cooked ones in a little press [imagine a percolator basket with a piston to ram down into it] and squeeze, and you get potatoes smushed down into [ideally] little rice-like bits. This is supposed to make smoother mashed potatoes than mashing with them with the traditional implements of destruction.

We never bothered with turning the riced potatoes into mashed potatoes. We just put the riced potatoes into a casserole dish, added butter and salt, and put the dish into the oven while the rest of dinner cooked.
