What I don't get is the way they used the Church to defend their "right" to keep her body alive. If one truly believes what the Church teaches us, that we all return to the loving presence of God, then why would one seek to artificially deny a loved one that release? Watching the papal death watch today seems like a pretty stunning reminder of what the Church's actual position on death is, that it's nothing to be hastened, but that it's also something perfectly natural, and not to be feared.

I always hear that reading in the voice of Linus -- since that's the reading he does in The Charlie Brown Chrismas Special -- which in my own oddly-churched way, seems like the true story of Christmas to me. One of my happy memories is decorating the tree with my brother and my Mom and a few oddball friends while the Charlie Brown special played in the background, and when Linus came out, and wrapped his security blanket around his head so he looked like a shepherd, and read from Matthew, we all paused, and listened, and my mother cried quietly in the corner. A nice memory ....

Okay, I'll jump in with two feet on the tinfoil hat brigade and send everyone over to Eric Francis's astrology blog (http://planetwaves.info/). Apparently, the stars all point to a "wounded king" -- the astrology all points to a reign fraught with deceit, and an increasing level of radicalism and an overthrow of the "wounded king". I think we need to push for impeachment. He lied about the WMD, and he stole the election. Impeach the fucker. Be empowered.

John -- interesting note on the tax issues -- no wonder my book is out of print (or rather "out of stock indefinitely" which means the rights don't revert to me) after three years! I knew it had something to do with storage/inventory issues, but didn't understand the nuances ... as a final indignity, the 200 copies of the paperback I ordered not only never arrived, but were pulped. Thank goodness I ordered a lot of copies of the hardcover when it was remaindered ...

Teresa -- the elision of fiction/nonfiction bothered me too. I published my first novel with your parent company four years ago (and my gratitude to George Witte is boundless) for what at the time I thought was a terrible, tiny, awful advance -- as things shook out, I'm grateful that Picador took a chance on me and gave me an advance I could actually earn out. It means my next book has a chance, *and* it means I wasn't tempted to dump my very wonderful day job -- a job that pays enough to allow me to support myself. Sigh. I guess I'm going to have to write a real blog entry ....
