One of the really nice things about where we live now is that I don't have to worry about the neighbors being upset by the "Save the Bill of Rights/Impeach Bush" sign in the 2nd floor window of our house. Capitol Hill is a veritable hotbed of liberals. (Though according to that how your neigbors donate thing there are a few people who donated to Bush. But nobody on this street.)

Patrick's distinction is a real one, but one which Glaser didn't make -- at least in my reading. I did enjoy the article and I think there's good stuff in it -- I said that. However he seems to want them to be universally applicable truths -- unless I'm gravely misreading and that's not impossible -- and I have my doubts about that.

Well, I don't know whether it does or not; I haven't the experience necessary to address most of them. It merely, as I said, makes me suspicous of them. What other assumptions is he using which are true for him but not for others which might tend to undermine his point? No way for me to know so I'll have some salt thanks.

Well, I suspect the point is that if you have something absorbing that you enjoy doing you might not turn to drugs out of boredom. Which may or may not be true but probably most people aren't going to find Indian beading all that absorbing. (Completely discounting that, of course, boredom is the only, or even primary, reason for people to ingest illegal substances.)

The Milton Glaser thing is interesting. But. He's gotten something so wrong, through assuming everyone is the same, in one of them, I am suspicious of the others. The one I am talking about is the test for whether someone is toxic or nurturing in your relationship. It doesn't matter how much I love someone or they love me and how good our relationship is or whatever: I am an introvert; contact with people is exhausting. Solitude is refreshing and re-energizing. By his standards this would make everyone toxic to me and that's clearly nonsense. I feel I'm not being as clear about this as I'd like because I have a really bad cold. If people are confused I'll try again.

As with so many aspects of SF's subculture, one is left saying, on the one hand, hurray for our fine and broadminded tolerance; and on the other hand, eeuw.

As for the topic/s under discussion: I remain mum. Last time I ventured to have an opinion on a SFWA matter being discussed in a public forum a Certain Famous Candadian SF Writer tried to bitch slap me cause I wasn't a SFWA member. Tried.

I'll be ignoring it too. I mean, they didn't count my flying to Des Moines, renting a car, a hotel room, and eating out for a week as in-kind contributions, so why should this? Nuts to 'em says I.

Mayakda: I've also read the McKillip -- I have such mixed feelings about her work. I really really liked some of the early writing but she seems to be turning more and more wispy and ethereal as time goes on. Less and less substance. The current entry does have some interesting and quite uncomplimentary things to say about love and its power though.

Well, the two books I nominated for the MFA are Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and Paladin of Souls, but you've probably already thought of those. I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of Cloud Atlas but it hasn't happened yet. I should get the MFA long list in early March, if there's anything interesting, I'll pass it on to you.
