The solution that I have seen, especially for beautifully
illustrated kids books, is to remove the dust jacket and frame it in a
cheap store bought frame and hang it in the child's room.

Conversation with my kid, two years ago on MLK day.

Parent: "Was there anything about MLK in school today?"

Kid: "Yeah, it was really boring."

Parent: "Really? Did they mention how many times he got arrested?"

Kid: Rising inflection, eyebrows up, showing interest, "No."

Parent: "Remember hon, anyone who makes history boring is doing it wrong."

Refrigerator Thawing

Allow approximately 24 hours for every 5 pounds in a refrigerator set at 40 °F.

Refrigerator Thawing Times

(Whole turkey)

* 8 to 12 pounds..........1 to 2 days
* 12 to 16 pounds..........2 to 3 days
* 16 to 20 pounds..........3 to 4 days
* 20 to 24 pounds..........4 to 5 days

I posted on my LJ that the Monday before Thanksgiving should be declared "National Take Your Turkey Out Of The Freezer Day". It didn't seem to spread. Maybe someone here can come up with a better title/acronym.

Thak you for posting this. I had not read the magazine article before. I interned at LeMessieur several decades ago. I was discussing the Citicorp project as an example of engineering ethics just this week.

Thank you so much for ceasing to jump to conclusions, she said sarcasticly. The City of Boston in no way "Shut down". There were a few street closings, a few subway closings, but ONLY in the affected areas. I depend on the T for my transportation. I was in unaffected area, the MBTA web sight had timely, posted advisories for the affected areas, and my train was less than 5 minutes delayed.

And as someone who colaborated on explosive pranks during college, creative decoration in NO WAY indicates that a device is harmless.

Please let us also remember that the "surge" in Iraq is Plan B. Plan A was supposed to be going to war with Iran by now.

West Indies Cold Cure and Chicken Soup

Cold Cure
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tsp. grated ginger
1 dash of cayenne

Mix thoroughly and slug it down. Take every 2 to 4 hours until either you or the cold gives up.

This was published in Prevention Magazine. The recipe was recommended by Dr. Ben Kligler; Medical Director of Beth-Israel Center for Health and Healing in New York City. He was given this recipe by several of his West Indian patients.

Since Chicken Soup is also a traditional cold cure, I make my standard homemade chicken soup recipe (stock, carrots, parsnips, onions, etc.) and add the west indies cold cure in place of the normal soup spices. It adds a nice kick. Salt and pepper to taste.
