Greg L. - lucky? Walking down the locker row every day must have been a nightmare for him!

"That is minimally correct, sir, although countervailing weapons have been developed to reduce the risk of a unilateral preemption escalating to an exchange of weakly godlike agencies.''

This story is deeply disturbing (read, wonderful), and this sentence is proof. Thank you, Mr. Stross.

Tina: You mean Matthew 19:24. 24:19 is the middle of Jesus' own prophecy of the end of the world, though.

Thank you Faren, and I am adding Barlough to my list immediately. Anyone who has a character described/named a "besotted bible-spouting stonemason Shank Bottom" is an author I must read.

Thank you for the cautionary note, Chad. I wouldn't be inclined to "catch up" with Heinlein and Azimov - and I was being somewhat coy, as I did read works by those masters back in the day.

I also essayed Eragon this year, which I note no one sees fit to recommend - nor would I.

I have ordered The Stars My Destination from the library as well as a work by a poster here, Dragon Waiting: A Masque of History. And I am eyeing, with some trepidation, A Game of Thrones which I have seen compared to A. Trollope, an author I revere.

Again, thanks to all. The depth of knowledge and collective wit of this community is humbling.

This lurker really appreciates all the recommendations. I stopped with Tolkein and Herbert (Dune only) back in 1975, so I have a LOT of catching up to do! Thanks to all.

Janet - I have to remember that "convert to Arial for proofing" idea. I've been burned too many times firing off memos etc with flagrant errors, just from reading too fast.

And thanks to Mark W. for the Bembo zoo - whee!

But to all: does anyone else long for text numerals?? Ever since I encountered them in Bringhurst (may his tribe increase) and The Book of Common Prayer I watch for them everywhere - in vain.

Bringhurst (p. 47): "[Text figures] are basic parts of typographic speech, and they are a sign of civilization: a sign that dollars are not really twice as important as ideas, and numbers are not afraid to consort on an equal footing with words."

The Cooper Black movie is fantastic!! Thank you Kristjan! Now - can anyone identify the book of type that is photographed about 3/4 through the film? It looks absolutely delicious and I'd love to find a copy.....

So very sorry! That sinking, horrid, "There's been an irretrievable error...." feeling in the stomach. What a shame.

Following Jonathan's post, another proofing horror story. The galleys of the Episcopal Hymnal 1982, with many many misprints, typos, and complex musical notation errors noted (at the Publisher's request) on an early version of Post-it notes - placed hurridly in an overnight package and air shipped across the country.
The climate change in the air cargo caused ALL the notes to drop out of the galleys and uselessly into the bottom of the package. No time to go back and correct, and so the first enormous printing of a national resource is rife with error, some of them not at all appropriate for an ecclesiastical book!

Oh. My. Thank you, Teresa, and everyone else besides. So good to see a community that Understands bacon's place in the kitchen.
