If he had any sense he'd still be running, but I soon found him gawking at the fools in the parade. The boy wanted a hat just like the one in front: tall, and heavy with sequins. All the way home he was babbling about it. Not bloody likely.

abi @5 I accept your challenge!
It was a chance meeting. He was lost, lying down in the grass near my home, feeling sorry for himself and talking to the air. Perhaps I should have walked away, but I was bored with my routine and in need of a holiday. His face was sweet, and his hair was brighter than gold.
We were both lonely, and careless because of it. He wanted companionship, for a time. Having never loved before, I thought it a game, and was eager to play.
Our acquaintance grew in small, sacred increments. He kept every promise, and was never late enough to cause me despair. He once spoke of another who had tamed him. For a moment, I wished that I could have known him when he was wild. No one else has ever been as honest, as delightful, as obliging as he. I relished the small ceremonies of our intimacy.
He left when the birds did. The wind in the wheat fields still calls his name.
I don't regret one moment of the time we spent together; without it, he would have been nothing, but because of it he is everything. There is no one like him in all the world.
mythago @ 140 - I thought Laurier was on the five?
Just watched Harper and Dion addressing the nation via streaming video on cbc.ca. Layton and Duceppe are coming up later.
Harper was practically vibrating with barely restrained anger, and I think there may have been at least one lie - I'll have to check a transcript later.
Dion was painfully earnest in his appeal. There was repeated use of the phrase "your parliament."
I should make popcorn.
Derryl@#27 -- I've had to explain this to a lot of people lately. I didn't vote for Harper, or for Layton or Dion. I voted for Megan Leslie.
I have to call my mother later and get her opinion on this. This election was her first since she got her citizenship, and I hope that she's still following the news. She and I both admire the GG and deplore the current PM.
The most miserable and uninspiring thing about our election was the turnout. I'm hopeful that the US election and the current situation are getting the attention of those who didn't vote because they thought it wouldn't matter.
I am increasingly delighted with the whole mess.
I've got half of a scarf of doom knitted and in a holding pattern. It's light and dark pink stripes, about ten inches wide and acrylic. Well, it's long enough to be respectable scarf length, but my sister ordered Dr. Who scarf length. I don't like working with the acrylic, so she'll get it in a few months.
I got a secondhand sewing machine that I need to figure out. I figure it's about time I learned how to construct some clothing basics. It's old and green and metal, and it's built into a wooden desk. I love it.
I want to make cookies again soon. Should I make snickerdoodles or chocolate chip? Last time I made snickerdoodles I dosed the cinnamon sugar with a preposterous amount of coriander, and it was bliss. I'm tempted to try cumin or white pepper this time. I like spicy-sweet things.
I work in a call center (inbound!), and you people puts me on guard like nothing else. It isn't a universal indicator, but it's definitely a warning sign.
Nancy@31:
I had to look that up to make sure you weren't joking.
If I keep discovering that I need to merge words like this, does that mean that my vocabulary is getting smaller?
Niall @27 re subtle/suttle:
Me too! I can't remember what the nuances were anymore, but it made perfect sense at the time. I think I realized my error in a flash of embarrassment when I was fifteen or so.
I usually pick up some plain brown paper and then hunt for colourful fabric ribbons to dress it up. The paper is ridiculously inexpensive and the ribbon is reusable.
Item is handmade. Any variations in shade or weave are not flaws, but part of the individual nature of the item.
My sister and I are making Trinidad Black Cake this year. It's so good that a half-dozen of my cousins have had it at their weddings.
We're using a recipe from Naparima Girls High School Cookbook. The fruit is soaking in rum and cherry brandy as we speak.
I've increased the quantity of alcohol as per advice from my aunt, who calls it "drunken fruitcake." I've got a chunk of one of her masterpieces that she gave me when I visited, and will go nibble on it once I post.
Jen @ 84: No, it was Steve Carrell who said it. See here. Oh, I do adore youtube.
Oh, bad words.
So very sorry. My heart to all who knew him well.
