I suspect that this travesty can be chalked up to Apple's
priorities rather than some sort of more generic idiocy. In many
spheres, they put a lot of effort into user experience, and the
fact that they haven't in this one suggests that they don't see it
as an important (i.e. big money making) venue to deploy their UI
talent.
It is possible that they are mistaken . . . they seem to be losing
Teresa's business.
