*Toasting with a good lager*

I remember the surreality of the event: "It's going away??!"

And then visiting Berlin in 2005, finding what a wonderful city it was, and saying, "There used to be a WALL through here?!!"

Carcassonne is wonderful indeed.

But I have to say that the Northern/Norman turret roofs installed by Viollet-le-Duc are jarring, to say the least. And I'm a fan of Viollet-le-Duc!

April 19 - our wedding anniversary, 23 years and merrily counting. It's been a real drag to have recent horrific events overshadow it, but the darkness shall not prevail.

Bruce @12 - sorry, but it's St. John Latern, not St. Peters. Not that St. Peters is anything to sneeze at!

We interrupt this thread to direct readers to the "Tiling Patterns, Floor of St. John Latern" on the Particles list to the left, posted by our hostess from Rome yesterday. Wow!

That is all.

Spherical Time @46 - I'd like to hear more about which sub-section defines mainstream Xianity for you, and why. No pouncing or "gotchas" - I'm genuinely interested.

2009 may indeed be a helluva ride, but I can't think of better company to ride with.

Happy New Year to all!

Re: Particle, "You want it when?"

I have always liked the sign one sometimes sees in certain stores: You can have it good, you can have it cheap, you can have it fast: pick two.

I've meditated on this aphorism a lot and it seems to me a brilliant summary of actual economic principles.
If it's good and fast, it won't be cheap.
If it's cheap and good, it won't be fast.
If it's fast and cheap, it won't be good.

Elegant and true, yes?
Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Terry - "ctrl"+click best Firefox tip ever.

Abi - looking forward to #119, c.f. the Psalm (one of my favorites.)

Following the Wiki links sent me to this moving article on Brahms' relationship with Muehlfeld and the genesis of Op. 115.

That noted, I must confess to disliking the clarinet. Too hooty and slick - give me double reeds!

PS - the performance posted in the wiki article is unsatisfactory - too many wrong notes and tuning problems in the (admittedly treacherous) second mvt.

Tim K. - please, you have plenty of back cred here. If there's something you know from your 20+ years of on-the-ground political experience, don't just lob superiority over the transom and flounce off. "Bear witness. Iterate."

Just in case you scrolled right past it, do take a look at Otto's Sausage Kitchen.

"Sausage is one of earth's divine pleasures, and we're rolling in it."

Takes a minute to load, but worth the wait!

Auch ein Klagelied zu sein im Mund der Geliebten ist herrlich;
Denn das Gemeine geht klanglos zum Orkus hinab.

-- Friedrich Schiller, Naenie
Set to sublime music by Brahms. My condolences.
