Eeep! Just got back form the road to see this.

Just this: Get better.

Brenda, there are no expanded protections in the new FISA bill. The already-existing FISA bill, which is not going to expire, already has all the protections with none of the problems introduced by the new one.

The fact is that we don't need any new FISA bill. The only reason FISA exists at all is because Republicans don't obey the 4th Amendment. Now they don't obey the FISA law, either.

The expanded program obviously doesn't protect us from terrorists, since Bush expanded it before 9/11 and it didn't do any good. Whereas Clinton didn't expand it, and managed to catch terrorists and stop further terrorist action.

The effectiveness of our security is not about the ability to spy on everyone all the time, it's about the willingness of our government to do its job properly. You don't get that by giving your rights away.

What terrible news to wake up to. I was always delighted to see him, he was one of those few people I felt naturally at home with. Now I can't look forward to having lunch with him at conventions, and I'll miss him in comment threads.

God damn it.

But the point, Martin, is that they physical ballot is not a safeguard unless it is actually counted by hand.
Posted on entry Ars Technica on recounting New Hampshire ::: January 12, 2008, 08:00 PM:
I note that Stokes suggests that no Republican candidate would "roll over" for Clinton the way the Dems did for Bush.

But I'm not so sure. There were a number of close races in 2006 where the Republicans didn't contest, much to the surprise of Democrats.

And my best guess for the reason is that they already knew that a hand-count would show that, in fact, the race wasn't close at all, and the Democrats had beat them in a landslide.

But that doesn't mean the noise machine won't use it throughout a Democratic victory (by any Democrat) to say that they don't believe the Dem won and that the vote was hacked. They'll just wait until it's too late to call for a recount to smear the winner for four/eight years.

I knew Billy Jack was still alive. I think he ran for Pres. in '04 as well, if I recall.
Posted on entry That wonderful Bush plan to "speed up" holiday air travel? ::: November 18, 2007, 08:49 AM:
Relax, when it comes to helpful announcements from the Bush administration, this is a best-case scenario - that it does no harm and amounts to advertising water as fat-free.

Because ordinarily when they announce they are doing something nice for us, they are actually doing something really destructive to us.

So, happy holidays! Enjoy!

on LJ, my favourite nick is squatted by somebody who seems to have gone offline years ago

When I opened my LJ account, I discovered that "Avedon" was taken by someone who had set up an account for an RSS feed to my blog. Only the facility that was creating my RSS feed died, and I can't contact the owner of the account to get him to pick up the feed I now generate myself, so it's just moribund.

getting some way of converting those # references to direct links would solve most of the remaining problems.

The date-stamps are the permalinks for the individual comments.

I've noticed the same thing.

On the new ranking system I've been in the top 10k, somewhere between 7k and 7.7k, ever since they started showing it on the top right corner with the little thumbnail.

Then I suddenly started sinking and I'm outside the top 10k now.

This despite the fact that I've been posting more at Eschaton lately and link to myself in my signature (in honor of Brendan Nyhan blaming Atrios for something I once posted). This also, of course, generates more links from blogs that have not previously linked to me.

I'd think links from a high-authority blog like Atrios' joint would have pushed me up rather than down.

Well, bugger:

…what if the makers of 300 made a movie about the American Revolutionary War?

I am reminded of a letter I once saw in the Guardian responding to an article about fashion, which went something like:

"[Author] says the joke is that there has never been a major women's fashion designer who was actually attracted to women.

"No. The joke is that there was one: Coco Chanelle."

"Herb Lubalin’s business card"

It looks more like a "visiting card" - there's no reference to his business.

Pretty, though. Made me want one just like it.

The years are shorter, but the waits are now long and scary, because either George or I could die before he finishes and I get to read Ice and Fire.

And certain people are giving me books that are actually half the novel, and it's a very long wait until the other half when that happens.

The trouble with that little widget is that it slows down the page load. I'd stick it on a separate page with a link to it, or "below the jump", so that it's not on the main page.

Impeachment proceedings against the entire administration - the full cabinet; all the political appointees - have to start. It's the only way to prevent Bush from pardoning everyone.
