Just as a small data point--it was Fred Phelps who--with his "congregation" burned my book BRIAR ROSE on the steps of the KC Board of Education building. The reason? There was a gay character in it.

I heard this morning when I opened my email. And now I realize I can never go to dinner with Charlie again, or sit on his lap in a car (a bizarre story) again, or argue with him when he wanted to tell me how I should write my next book, or. . .
Yes he was funny, dear and annoying in equal measure. And a great drinker-in of life. That's why thinking of him dead is simply not possible.

Charleston? CHARLESTON? I have a son, daughter-in-law, and twin grands in Charleston. I didn't know Charleston had a major quake. Not bad enough I worry about hurricanes every summer. Now I have to worry about earthquakes there?

Neil on his FaceBook page, before the award was announced (but immediately after he'd been called) wrote "I am so fucking over the moon." And I had two simultaneous thoughts: Congratulations, Neil, and you are such a bad boy jumping the gun like that.
It was a matter of minutes, really, and understandable. In the old days (before Internet) he would have been on the phone with friends.

About slave owners. . .unless you expect us to track back to Biblical times, it would be hard to point to Jewish shetetl folk from the Ukraine like my father's family, or Latvia like my mother's, to find any slave owners.
