I'm a resident of a Boston suburb ( and a long time lurker) who uses our major highways around and through Boston. I think the media response to all this was stupid. But looking at how our media responds to the possibility of a snow shower, I'm not surprised.
I would add that apparently other cities did not have the devices attached to bridges, underpasses, etc. But that's really beside the point.
What all this shows me is how effective the current administration's attempts to create a paranoid nation have been.
Global dimming. PBS's NOVA just did a special on global dimming. The short verison is if we improve our pollutant emissions and global dimming improves, the earth takes a huge jump in temperature over and above what the global warming models are predicting.
Fade,
If you're still reading this thread... I highly recommend practice snow driving when you have the chance. Find a large parking lot and practice some skids. Not high speeds, just enough to begin to skid. 10-15 mph and hit the brakes.
Your first skid is very scary and it's better to experience it before it matters. There's a technique to dealing with skids, turn your wheels toward the direction of the skid and gently touch the gas to get traction before trying to change direction.
Practice is kind of fun. The real thing gets your heart racing.
Obsidian Wings has a longish comment on this that talks about how the workers were treated. If true, they were forced to buy food from the company store, etc, etc. So their $3/hr quickly became very little.

Thanks so much for reminding me about "Mimsy Were the Borogoves". My aging mind kept thinking it was written by Sturgeon, but I can't ever forget the story. I've often thought of making an installation/maze of tissue paper, slimy rocks, etc.
I'm afraid I'm a hair too old for The Electric Company, but can identify with Beany and Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent, Kukla,Fran and Ollie, and a show where you put a piece of filmy plastic on the 10" TV screen and used a crayon to follow along with the program. I'm forgetting the name of it, though.....
