Oh dear, Mr Bell, could that be construed as, perhaps, ... seditious ... under our new Antipodean Dispensation?

When I hear/read the name "Lucan", memories of this case are my first reaction. The Seventh Earl of Lucan has not been seen since the night of November 7th, 1974, when his children's nanny was beaten to death with a piece of lead pipe, and his estranged wife was attacked [She staggered for help to a pub called The Plumbers' Arms; would you write that?]. Some months later an inquest jury declared him guilty of murder. He was officially declared dead in October 1999 so the family could settle inheritance & so forth, but speculation, rumour & theorising continues.
This spot has a pretty good summary of the history for the 20th anniversary last year, and links, such as Lord Lucan.com, The Lucan Review, and Last Person [known] To See Lord Lucan Alive Dies (in September 2004).
You can find a whole lot more -- about 22,400 results in the UK for "Lord Lucan" on google.co.uk, for instance. I think I'm not unhappy that I've never heard of the other Lucan mentioned above. (Lucasian OTOH, leads to a whole other universe ...)

Back in antediluvian days, I lived in a couple of share houses over a few years. One had FOUR tenants named David. Then Andrew (or was it Louis?) moved out and one quite acceptable replacement was yet another David. A handful!

We were split on whether this was a pro or a con. Yes, there would be some awkwardnesses - but not that much more than with four, and, well, there was a certain cachet to the idea of the House of Davids. Unfortunately the effluxion of time has effaced what finally happened from my memory.

Very many Filipena workers in the Middle East. Possibly males in menial jobs too. The economy is very dependent on money repatriated from the overseas workers - throughout much of the world. Hence the vulnerability of the Philippines to hostage-taking in Iraq.

This month's Sydney Futurian SF discussion meeting is about "Problems with Galaxy Spanning Civilisations and Empires" (GSC&Es) Any suggestions for Sci-Fi nits to pick? In particular any references to Science Fiction stories where problems with (GSC&Es) occur or are explained away?

The meeting is at the University of Technology Sydney (Broadway) on Friday night, 7 to 9 pm, in a seminar room behind the Great Hall, level 5, Tower Building.
All are welcome to attend, contact SCIENCE-MATTERS (a) YOUR+ABC+NET+AU with suggestions or for meeting details.
