At least some academics agree with this interpretation of Frankenstein. I recall an occasion, before a university committee meeting, when I was shooting the breeze with an English professor, and the book came up. She agreed quite firmly with my suggestion that if there was a monster in that book, it was Frankenstein himself.

A question: what impact will the fact that this is coming out of Turkey have? Given the historical animosity between Turkey and Iran, and given (resentful?) memories of the Ottoman Empire among Arabs, will that hinder acceptance of the proposed revisions?

Bruce Cohen @167:

Hillary should use "You Don't Mess Around with Jim"

You do remember how that song ends, don't you?

"You better believe they sung a different kind of story when Big Jim hit the floor"

Just a point of possible clarification regarding "my country, right or wrong": Bartlett's gives the full quote from Decatur as "Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong." It also quotes Carl Schurz, much later, thus: "Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be put right."

#107: Thanks. And damn. All but one of my handful of Loebs, I bought while in college - i.e., no later than 1984. The exception is Procopius' Secret History, first published in 1935.

Sadly, I have little Latin and no Greek.

How old is older?

I don't remember the author or the title, but there was a short story in F&SF five or ten years ago involving the emergence of a species of carnivorous pack-hunting chipmunks. Very scary.

There's a minor error, I think, in the Taibbi article. He claims that "Sanders is expected to become the first Independent ever elected to the U.S. Senate next year." If I recall correctly, Harry Byrd Jr. of Virginia was elected as an Independent in 1970. (Until that time, he had served as a Democrat, but was considering switching to the Republicans if they came within striking distance of control of the Senate.)
