I read Anthem years ago and it took me about 45 minutes to finish. Since I knew nothing about Ayn Rand, to me, it read like a tract for Hitler Youth, especially with the tall, blue-eyed and blond hero and heroine. I thought it was trash and never was tempted to read Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged. My DH reassured me I didn't miss much.
Fragano,
Miami has not had a snow*fall*. it's had snow maybe every 100 years, the last one in 1975 or 76 (I was in high school). Really, it was just a flurry that melted before it even reached the ground.
Hurricanes, on the other hand, are a reason not to live there, as well as the predilection of local officials to want to pave over the Everglades. South Florida has a big, fat bullseye painted on it. Talk about below sea level. The premise of "Their Eyes were Watching God" could happen again, especially after witnessing what happened in NOLA. There's a big huge dike that is supposed to protect South Florida from Lake Okeechobee (which is basically a man-made lake), but I wonder just how protective it will be.
I think every Arizona legislator, Miz Christie whatshername and David on this board should all be required to read "Reading Lolita in Tehran." It would show them how much they have in common with the ayatollahs in Iran. You know, telling a professor what literature she should be requiring the class to read, or rather telling her what lit they should not be reading.
The prime example, in case you haven't read it, Kat, is the Great Gatsby. Her passage about what makes great literature versus literature written to follow certain preconceived notions should be hammered to the door of congress, school boards and state legislatures who want to dictate college courses everywhere.

Looks like it's the beginning of a campaign...
A person of soulless nature like dear Ivan said something similar on Terry Neal's live chat at the Washington Post, noting that a Greyhound bus ticket is $10. Of course, Greyhound closed down on Saturday, so that was out. And even if Greyhound was open, please explain to me where these folks were supposed to *go?* Would you have taken them in, Ivan? Some other soulless soul said "people could walk" to evacuate. yeah, you can get *real* far in 12 hours on foot, especially with small children and elderly folks. It's as if these "haves" have absolutely no concept of what it's like to be poor and living paycheck to paycheck. Katrina also struck at the end of the month, you know, about the time cash was running out....
