TW: I live near the University of Maryland; we have a great number of international students from all over the globe, and the parasol is definitely in fashion nowadays... usually in the hands of Far Asian students.

Thanks for posting this. I noticed I could be hitting that point by Thursday, and I was going the distractions route. Even then, it was impossible not to feel guilty.

I'm curious about how many people read this line and instantly had a story idea.

I'm more curious about how many of those had the idea before reaching the words "Hugo Award".

But I'm most curious about how long it'll be before someone supplies the "[Author] did that in [storyname]."

I knew his spiritual forebears when I was growing up, though back then they were less prone to write bad novels.

Teresa: This has to be one of the most poignant "back then..." statements I have ever read.

As for the article... ew? Common sense? Decency? No? OK, then.


(And being new to commenting at this site, protocol question: I've seen people call each other by first name when addressing each others' comments, but being a newcomer I'm hesitant, even though I did it above. Is that OK?)
