All the folks who are so trustful of Piers Anthony for etymological information might want to look up "jot" in a dictionary. There's another letter it has a much more to do with than "t", with which it has naught.

Having made a bunch of money in the early 80s in a job whose title doesn't even exist in the marketplace any more (thanks Microsoft!) I have a hard time working up a great deal of sympathy.

I think there were a fair number of "foreign fighters" on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. Seems to me people generally think, now at least, that was a good thing ... at a minimum, it doesn't take a huge amount of effort to imagine their motivations in the absence of having homes "of their own" in Spain.
