I'm an obsessive reader here - the news seems to filter here first, so here I am again.
My parents are in southeast Houston; my brother, his girlfriend, and her family are north of Beaumont. Neither group is leaving, both have boarded up and battened down (patio furniture is in the pool).
They seem to be optimistic (stocking up on batteries, water, chocolate, and beer), and trying to evac now is obviously a bad idea. I'm just keeping my hope afloat and reading all the news. (And having flashbacks to Alicia in '83. I was 6. My memories may be slightly out of scale.)
Thank you for keeping the information and the conversation flowing. I really appreciate having this resource, and never moreso than in the last few months.

I started the Aubrey-Maturin books last year after hearing wonderful things about them from readers of Bernard Corwell. (My parents are big fans of Sharpe.)
I did not expect to be as totally engulfed in the books as I have become. They are some of the most brilliant storytelling I've encountered yet. I have learned so much by reading them, and rereading them. Thank goodness NYPL has them all. (Next up: The Mauritius Command.)
And I have a terrible crush on Stephen. ;)

Gigi, I'm with you - I wrote my first year Interfaith Seminary term paper about my Spiritual Journey through Science Fiction & Fantasy.
I'm the only person I know (although I'd love to meet some others) who has an Emperor Palpatine action figure on my altar.
