Born 1973, I remember Skylab crashing back to earth (July '79, when I would have been just over 6), but only because my day camp did used it as the theme for a treasure hunt they were running ("find the pieces of Skylab!").

I definitely remember the Iranian hostage crisis, and Reagan's election -- I remember asking my mother the morning after the election who was President now, not having grasped the whole "Inauguration Day" part yet.

Gigi Rose @ #21 : the woman who signs the OVFF concerts is Judi Miller, who won OVFF's Pegasus award for Best Performer this year. She's amazingly talented.

There was a funnel cloud sighted over Jersey City a few weeks ago. Didn't touch down, so it wasn't technically a tornado, but it's certainly not unheard-of.

Echidna: I wouldn't be so definitive about "the upcoming elimination of the Leap Second." The US has proposed this to the ITU, but it doesn't sound like anyone else likes the idea.

On first reading this entry with bleary eyes, I read "tradescantia" as "transcendentia".

I found this fascinating, but suspected that such flowers would probably not be looked upon favorably by the DEA.

Kip W: Chinese restaurants here (NYC) regularly have "Singapore Mai Fun", which is indeed Mai Fun noodles with curry and various meats.

I'm sure it's not as good as you get in Singapore, but it definitely matches your description.

BTW, Buddhist doctrine sounds quite kindly, yet there must have been some repressive regimes of believers along the way. Can somebody offer this near-ignoramus about Oriental history a little info? (Not meaning to divert the thread.)

I haven't read this book, only reviews of it, but Brian Victoria's Zen At War apparently goes into some detail about Japanese Buddhism's complicity in Imperial Japan's militarism and wartime activities.

On the subject of otherkin, see Outcast Otherkin: "Look, whatever you believe is cool. Just allow us to make fun of you for it. "

I'm glad to see the spirit of classic RASFF lives on in the Nielsen-Hayden blog comment sections.

The comments in this thread have mentioned cats, alcohol, chocolate, and religion. We just need kashrut to complete the set.
