  1. 1.  Charles James KragCharles James Krag was born on 17 Sep 1856 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio (son of Peter T. Krag and Mary Kraus); died on 11 Jun 1932 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio; was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.

    Other Events:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1857, Ohio
    • Alternate birth: Abt 1858, Ohio

    Notes:

We know his middle name from the 1860 census, where it is abbreviated "Jas."

According to the 1910 census, his father was born in Denmark and his mother was born in France. The 1910 census also calls him proprietor of a "music ware store". From the evidence of the elegant cartoon sketch attached to this entry, he must have later become a clothing merchant.

Charles married Lucy E. Sanger on 16 Sep 1880 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Lucy (daughter of Samuel A. Sanger and Hannah Maria Hooker) was born on 2 Mar 1859 in Holliston, Middlesex, Massachusetts; died on 12 Jan 1932 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio; was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. 1. 2.  Peter T. Krag was born on 11 Dec 1806 in Jutland, Denmark; died on 7 Dec 1871; was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.

    Notes:

His birth date is derived from his gravestone, which says he died 7 Dec 1871 aged "64y 11m 27d".

He arrived at New York on 7 Oct 1839 on the Francis out of Amsterdam. This does not seem to have been primarily a passenger vessel; the arrival documents list only two other passengers. He is described as a merchant from Denmark, age 33 years 2 months. Note that this would place his birth in August 1806 rather than December.

The ancestry.com database of abstracts of arrival records "New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Immigration Lists, 1820-1850" gives the same information as the above, except that the vessel is called the Barque Francis.

He was naturalized a US citizen in Fairfield County, Ohio on 30 Oct 1844.

He applied for a passport on 20 Mar 1850. The application says that he had been a merchant in Ohio for twelve years and a naturalized US citizen for four. Both of these numbers are slightly off — as shown above, he can't have been in Ohio for twelve years when he arrived in the US only eleven years earlier. And he had been a US citizen for about six years, not four.

He was appointed postmaster of Canal Winchester in Franklin County, Ohio on 14 Apr 1854.

Peter married Mary Kraus on 29 Apr 1841 in Franklin County, Ohio. Mary (daughter of George Kraus) was born on 21 Jan 1821 in Detwiler, Alsace, France; died on 6 Jun 1896; was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
