"On the settlement of his father's estate, he was allowed more than his brother on account of his being lame."     Although most of the American descendants of the Kouwenhoven/Couwenhoven family eventually changed their surname to Conover, there were descendants of Garret Wolfertse van Kouwenhoven in Brooklyn calling themselves Kouwenhoven as late as 1939, and possibly more recently.

    Doctor of Law. Studied first at Leiden and then at Orleans. At Leiden, he belonged to the Gelderland-Overijssel student fraternity. In the Netherlands, he was a court advocate and a captain in the service of the Estates General.

    Upon emigrating to New Amsterdam he became first counselor to Peter Stuyvesant, 1653-57, and schout fiscaal in 1656-57. He was one of the original proprietors of New Utrecht.

    Also known as Wolfert or Wolphert Gerretse; also van Kouwenhoven; also "Van Amersfoort", etc.

    Possibly a son of Gerrit Wolferts Suype of Nijkerk, in the Dutch province of Gelderland, and his wife Styne Roberts. Gerrit Wolferts Suype was buried in the chancel of the church at Nijkerk on 12 Dec 1604. Suype was a common surname in sixteenth-century Gelderland, along with its variants Sube, Zuben, Supen, etc.

    Wolfert is first seen circa 1630 as a superintendent of farms at Rensellaerswyck, near what is now Albany. From about 1632 to 1636 he leased and farmed a bouwerie on Manhattan, running roughly from today's Chatham Square down to Pearl Street. In 1636 he was granted several hundred acres on Long Island, where he named his plantation "Achervelt." This settlement was later named New Amersfoort, in honor of his birthplace. It is now known as the Flatlands neighborhood of Brooklyn.

    In 1654 he served as a schepen (roughly, alderman) of New Amsterdam, and in 1657 he was made a burgher. He served on the Council of Eight Men. Gerritsen Beach is named for him.
