Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Christopher Butler was born in in Westmoreland County, Virginia (son of John Butler and (Unknown) Thompson); died before 27 Jul 1703 in North Carolina.

Family/Spouse: Henrietta. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. Christopher Butler was born before 1680; died in 1763 in Chowan County, North Carolina.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  John Butler died after 1723.

    Notes:

Possibly born as early as 1668.

Possibly a son of Thomas Butler (d. bef. 27 Jan 1677, Westmoreland County, Virginia) and Jane Baldridge, daughter of James and Dorothy Baldridge. Certainly his descendants include a large number of men named Christopher, just as the proven descendants of Thomas and Jane do.

However, if so, and if he really was married to a daughter of Edward Thompson by Joan, widow of that Thomas Butler's father -- as claimed by Judge Edward F. Butler (citation details below) and shown here -- he would have been married to his half-aunt.

John married (Unknown) Thompson. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  (Unknown) Thompson (daughter of Edward Thompson and Joan).

    Notes:

Given as "Martha Thompson" in some sources.

    Children:
    1. 1. Christopher Butler was born in in Westmoreland County, Virginia; died before 27 Jul 1703 in North Carolina.

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Edward Thompson (son of Edward Thompson); died before 11 Mar 1662 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Edward married Joan before 10 Feb 1647. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Joan

    Notes:

Sometimes referred to as "Joan Christopher", but we don't actually know her maiden name, just the name of her first husband, Mountstephen.

However, as Jon M. Stallard points out (citation details below), it's notable how many of her descendants had Christopher as their given name -- including four of PNH's direct ancestors, all direct descendants of Joan through her marriage to Edward Thompson, whether or not her first husband Thomas Butler was also a PNH ancestor. (Which he may have been.)

    Children:
    1. 3. (Unknown) Thompson

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Edward Thompson was born in in of Berden, Essex, England (son of Thomas Thompson); died in 1657.
