Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Ruth Royce was born on 7 Dec 1645 in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut (daughter of Robert Royce and Mary); died after 19 Feb 1690.

    Other Events:

    • Alternate death: Bef 5 Jun 1695

    Notes:

Quite a few online sources have Ruth Royce's death date as 19 Feb 1690 (or 1689). This probably derives from E. B. Huntington's 1884 Genealogical Memoir of the Lo-Lathrop Family in This Country (citation details below):

"[John Lothrop] died, as the Wallingford records show, Aug 25, 1688, Æt. 44. Ruth, his widow, in Feb. 19, 1689-90, drew lot no. 4, in the distribution of that date."

In other words, 19 Feb 1690 is merely the last date on which Ruth Royce shows up in the records, but the qualifier "after" has fallen off that date in some transmissions.

In fact, as Huntington does not note but Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 does, by 19 Feb 1690 Ruth Royce was not only the widow of John Lothrop; she was also the wife of Abraham Doolittle, who she had married on 12 Feb 1689. They were each other's second spouses. Doolittle subsequently married Elizabeth Thorp on 5 Jun 1695, so Ruth has to have died between 19 Feb 1690 and that date.

Ruth married John Lathrop on 15 Dec 1669. John (son of Samuel Lathrop and Elizabeth Scudder) was born before 7 Dec 1645 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; died on 25 Aug 1688 in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. Ruth Lathrop died on 10 Aug 1750 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Robert Royce died in 1676.

    Other Events:

    • Alternate death: Bef 22 Sep 1676, New London, New London, Connecticut

    Notes:

"Robert Royce, an early settler in Stratford, CT, had land recorded there in his name as late as 1658, though he appears to have removed to New London, CT a year before that date. He was constable in 1660, and in the folowing year represented New London in the General Court. [...] It needs to be reaffirmed that the New London man was a separate individual from Robert Royce of Boston, with whom he has been persistently confused. Robert Royce of Boston left a widow Elizabeth; Robert Royce of New London died in 1676, leaving a widow Mary." [Janet and Robert Wolfe Genealogy]
